Morning Cup Of Coffee And Weather

Bucket list item there! I would love to visit Alaska. The only trouble with it is to get there you have to:

1] Fly
2] Drive Through Canada
3] Ferry

So it's expensive, you need to give up your freedom to get there, or leave your camper at home...But yah, I still want to go.

Way back when I was still a little new to this adulting thing, my boss' son lived there. We worked out of his house, so we got to know each other in a much different way than I had anyone I worked for. We became friends, and I got to know his family reasonably well. His son, when asked what Alaska was like was "Just watch Northern Exposure --- the show gets a lot more right than it does wrong"

Intrigues me -- that was one of my favorite shows at the time.

Fo far this has been the only band that I expected which has not come up yet.

Oh yeah. Laurel Canyon was an amazing place back then. It seems like most of the early rock and roll hall of fame lived there back then. Charlie Manson and his gang used to spend time at Dennis Wilson's (Beach Boys) house. The Tate murders actually have a connection to his music career failure. As Neil Young once said, "that boy didn't take rejection very well".

I've occasionally seen a music documentary about that time and location in the music scene. The stories and the people are quite fascinating. I'd be curious to hear your book review when you've finished reading it.

It's pretty clear where it is heading --- right now I'm about 3/4 of the way through, and the biggest thing I see is:
  • How many ties to TLA's in the MIC are represented --- Jim Morrison's Dad being Admiral Morrison, who ushered our way into the Vietnam war for example, not to mention Stephen Stills serving in Vietnam before the war -- not to mention Crosby's family ties...
  • How many "coincidental" things happen - "chance" meetings and persons who almost (or outright no) musical experience something getting gigs and contracts.
  • Strange deaths around the time of solstice and equinox....pagan holidays.
I suspect these factors will all get tied together...its pretty obvious

OK, thanks. Sounds like more of a conspiracy theory book than the comings and goings of some of the best musicians of my lifetime. No doubt they led crazy lives. Oh, well. Back to the sad tales of Karen Carpenter for me.
 
Just remember "Conspiracy Theorist" was created by the intelligence community to discredit those who were asking questions, the second rule is like onto it, "theory" does not mean it is wrong. There's a lot of shenanigans going on in the world.

The book does contain a treasure trove of who knew who, where they were, who they were playing with as well as what their personalities were.

Camping weekend! When I booked this trip, at least initially, I didn't "connect" the fact it was labor day weekend. I've become spoiled with weekday camping, where you have the park to yourself.

We had a slightly interesting experience traveling here -- our Outback threw a check-engine light at us, flashing brake, cruise, check engine, and traction control We just got gas --- I'm willing to bet all that drama is because of a loose gas cap.

SERIOUSLY, Subaru --- if it is just the gas cap --- is all that REALLY necessary? Especially disabling Crusie and going into reduced power mode.

Oh well, I left my OBD2 scanner at home....Off to AutoZone later to confirm and clear the code.

Here's the funny part - my bride searched google trying to discover what might be causing such a dramatic response. It seems excessive just a gas cap. The first page of results contained a post stating "This always happen to me on a stretch of road on '69 in Indiana..." We were on US 69 in Indiana....

Since conspiracy seems to be the theme today --- I'm looking for Fox Mulder right now :D

Have even replaced the gas cap. Sometimes it goes off on its own after a period of driving or after engine is shut off. Sometimes it happens quite often and then nothing for long stretches. Have owned 4 Outbacks, including (2) 2004 and a 2006. Has only ever happened on the 2013.

It did this once before, cleared the codes and it ha been fine for 120,000 miles. I'm hoping this is the case again. :)

Check engine lights are one thing --- but the light show was a bit much...
 
I had a couple of check engine lights on my xterra over the past year while towing. The car shook heavily and stalled. Each time I engaged the clutch, pulled over, restarted and then went my merry way, it finally threw a code near home. It was a crank shaft position sensor $15 aftermarket, $$80 Nissan. Replaced with the improved Nissan sensor. The no code was vexing. An OBD is almost a tool box essential now days.

We have loved all four of ours. All silver (matched the camper quite well, although that wasn't planned). Had three at one time, now down to two. All have been quite good cars. However, the 2013 has been more problematic than the three previous ones combined and that is a Subaru thing, due to the year it was made (lots of changes and issues that year). We aren't likely to replace it with a newer one, as quality has decreased and repair issues have increased. Even our Subaru guy has stopped buying and servicing them. Not yet sure what we will get.
 
In general, color aside, they are a great match...This is our first, and we've had it for 10 years....which says a lot for us. Especially me apparently...in retrospect I changed cars pretty quickly....not proud of that.

Agree on the recent changes, I think the whole car industry in general has gone downhill, toyota perhaps is still the overall best --- But the drive to light and electric is not good. Maybe for the average commuter, but I certainly don't fit that mold.
I think our next vehicle will be a van --- I want to build a shower/bath into it, and put in storage for wet gear. Perhaps a "tv room" and sofa. I'm not giving up my galley or bedroom though ;)
 
I’m in Alaska bird hunting. So far we are limiting out or a bird short. Another half day of hunting and then on to shooting some full auto at the range. I fly home late Tuesday and arrive early Wednesday.

I have a 2018 Forester. A couple of years ago, while camping in the rain, all the check lights came on. Took to dealer and they replaced the fuel check valve. Problem solved.

Most "check engine" (I and I do say MOST) are purely emissions. My ol' ford would throw "lean" codes on the drop of a hat, and I know dozens of F53 owners that have the exact same error routinely. And these seem to be unfixable...but that is a thread for another place.

There are codes for misfires which can indicate bigger problems like a head gasket failing, or a bad fuel injector (Hope for the second.) For these, the light show is probably important. In hindsight, my reaction was incorrect....

As it turns out, ours MAY be one of those "Do I have your attention now?" messages. The circuit that advances timing on the engine appears to be over advancing the engine, which will cause poor performance and economy. Its also possible a timing chain that needs attention? We'll see. The code occurred almost immediately after I fueled, my assumption was wrong. So, its off to a mechanic when we get home.

Right or wrong, I cleared the codes (after recording them) and I'll drive it home. If it reappears its dealer time. If not, lets hope for another 50k miles :) I'm sure my mechanic will get mad about it -- BUT -- the lights are distracting, and thus made it less safe to drive....and ultimately, I am responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle, not him....so we can discuss it :)

Lets hope it was a transiet problem --- and I can get another 50k
