Morning Cup Of Coffee And Weather

Well, the back is feeling a lot better. Last Sunday I made the mistake of picking up a sock from the floor and have been effectively bedridden ever since. When I was standing, I couldn't stand straight --- I looked like a question mark. I realized that when I walked I had to look like my Dad in his last 2 year. I even had a similar gate to him. I am not sure if I can make the bed in the camper...I'm goin gto try that this afternoon.

It looks like I'm going to be back in the saddle - maybe have some photos to post. We'll see how things unfold. Mostly me. If things go well, I'll be in a new chapter of my life. Big enough change, it may be a completely new book.

This is my first picture uploaded and posted since the upgrade. It was taken yesterday morning.

You've got a lot of leaves still. I know our folliage got a really late start --- we're at least a week or two behind 'schedule' Normally we expect peak in the last week of October....then you need a leaf blower to find the camp site :)

I couldn’t get on the forum again for several days. It’s good to have it back. I’m hoping for snow.

Can't say I'm EVER hoping for snow...but I have to admit, if I don't have to go anywhere, its kind of nice. Now, the minute I have to shovel it or deal with nice, or snow-plow deposits....all bets are off.

We've got the 1st chance for snow in the forecast one day next week. It's later than normal, and it won't stick if it does snow, but I'm glad to see it...

Not in Indiana. Temperatures hover at 25 overnight, but there's no real precipitation. A few "icy" nights -- but the daytime are all mid 30's low 40's through the New Year. January looks like colder but more of the same. Then February ... This is our worst month, it always is. But there's a good chance I'll not see those this year. There's a good chance I'll be in the deep south for that part of winter. Then return in March, where we usually get an ice storm in the last half.

Then the month were "mother nature" is truly off her meds --- but when camping season usually starts back up in full swing.

There's talk about Crossroads 2025 planning already. Unfortunatley, its in September again. I need to talk to our director and get that moved :) I'm officially way ahead of myself!!!!

Got quiet here! @Tour931 -- you hanging in there? I'm missing the banter!

It looks like my opportunity to clean the gutters is here. I'm looking outside and see blue skies...but the wind is whipping around pretty good -- with mid 40's. I can't say I'm looking forward to it -- this is one of the worst parts about owning a home. I hate this job. Cold, Wet, disgusting...its not like I put it off too long either, the last of the leaves just fell off the trees in the last couple of days.

I'm looking forward to spring travels already!

We put Leaf Guard gutters on the house and pole garage 20yrs ago, and haven't cleaned a gutter since, not cheap, but neither is trip to the ER if you fall off the ladder or roof...and with the amount of trees surrounding our home, gutter cleaning wasn't just a once a year job.

I looked at doing that some time ago, but never pulled the trigger. I'm a bit of a curmudgeon, and as stupid as it sounds the sales person there lost the sale virtually forever.

I ask a salesperson a simple question; I expect simple answers. I was having a polite conversation with a guy at the fair "Ok, whats the approximate cost per linear foot" This is where it turned a little nasty. "Oh! I couldn't POSSIBLY estimate that! Every house is different!"

I pointed out that my home had a single simple gabeled roof. 2 straight lines. He doubled down....I know the game well. The point is, to get to my house and apply sales techniques to nudge into a sale. I've been in sales for a long time before I turned into an IT geek - I KNOW the game.

But I also knew I had a budget, and if he was more than "x" - it was a waste of time. When I explained that, I said "Look, if you want an opportunity --- you've got to tell me if we're talking $2000, or $20,000...." where he cut me off -- and I did an about face and walked away.

The home I'm in now has a patio with a roof over it -- but the roof is badly designed, and traps leaves in the gutters -- in the spring, I want to tear it off and put up something more practical. We'll see how it goes. I'll certainly do something different with the gutters then.

To clean what I have, I just use a gas leaf blower and walk around the house blowing things out --- I get covered in leaf-guts and water -- but it only takes 10 minutes to do most of the house, that aforementioned patio -- another 20 minutes. But I'm not on me knees -- I'm walking wearing boots that have really good traction -- and besides my roof is kind of a low angle to begin with. The most dangerous part is mounting and dismounting the ladder, but the chimney gives me a really good hold point....Risk is small(ish)

...yeah, I know the type of sales person you're talking about...too bad they don't get the fact that some customers want to cut through all the BS, and just get down to the facts, and bottom line price. Just be careful up there, like me, you aren't getting any younger(or more nimble).

I just had a leaf filter system installed on my house. I had a good experience with the sales agent. He also stated he couldn’t give a price. He said an estimator would come out and give a free quote. There are numerous factors that are taken into consideration when calculating a quote. I believe that is a fair assessment.

Any salesman worth his salt will qualify a customer—there's no need to attempt to sell a Mercedes to a guy who flips burger patties at a fast food chain for a living. The same applies to a buyer who is just starting an IT career in a new city when looking at home improvements. I need to qualify my seller before I consider a purchase. I'm busy enough I don't have time to dance with a sales guy. I just don't enjoy that game.

Its a negotiation problem -- the first person to name a price is in a weaker position. I get it -- I don't like rude and shifty people, which, sadly, home improvement is full of. Also a lot of good people - trouble is you never know until after the fact. And the rude manner this guy handled my objection told me what I needed to know.

Reminds me of Tin Men with Danny DeVito & Richard Dreyfuss from the late 80's...

Great film! Well, it was -- I watched it recently and didn't enjoy it as much.

"Used Cars" with Kurt Russell is another one :) 99% of salespeople give the rest a bad name -- Love that jacket!

Seriously, sales can be an honorable profession. We are all in sales in one way or another. It is when sales becomes manipulative that I have a problem. Once you've worked in a sausage factory, you never want to eat the stuff again.

I've seen trashy sales people hold pens over contracts so the customer can sign, then 'accidentally drop' the pen so the customer picks it up --- the next logical step is to sign on the dotted line. Then there's Sharp Angle, artificial scarcity closes, drip pricing (for ONLY a hundred more..), service contracts ("protection plans") ....yuck.

My favorite is when a customer is looking at a 1988 Fiero GT, when another salesperson nonchalantly walks in asking "My customer wants to test drive that Fiero, you seen the keys?"

Good point. I haven't seen it since '87 - I might not feel the same about it today either... But it sure was a hit a mere 37 years ago!?!

I'll be watching tin-men here in the next few days, I watched Used Cars last night -- and I can only say "Memories are fonder"

Don't watch films that you liked in your youth. I'm thinking everything from "Speed Racer" and the other child level Anime through many movies that simply do not stand up to the test of time.
