You're passing right through my area! When you pass by Shelbyville Indiana wave
I'd say stop by for a coffee but I'm not there right now. I made an emergency trip to a state park 2 days ago - I'm at Summit Lake Indiana, which is north of New Castle. I'll be checking out this morning but I've got a couple customers that I need to help on the way home.
This is my first camping trip of the year — nothing special, just my usual style.
This campground is hit-or-miss. It has two nearly identical loops. Each has a heavily wooded section along the man-made lake with about 25 sites, while the rest is sparse trees or open fields. In those open areas, there are another 50 or so sites. I could look up the numbers, but I'm lazy. The fishing is supposedly decent, but that’s not my thing. There's a boat launch in the campground -- no wake --- its a quite place with a very dark night sky. If it weren't for people with LEDs on the caps. :\ The showers are old with terrible ventilation, and a urinal has had a “temporarily out of order” sign for years — typical sadly.
The real problem is statewide: the state keeps underfunding the DNR, so campgrounds suffer. Maintenance is poor, and prices are up $5–$15 per night from last year. Rarely is there a gate attendant except on weekends. They claim a $600 million surplus in the state, yet won’t properly fund the parks or cut taxes on things like Gasoline which we pay through the nose for.
Meanwhile, the state gives tax breaks to every data center and warehouse project (many sitting mostly vacant).
It’s disappointing, especially compared to Missouri, Florida, and Georgia, where state parks and campgrounds are managed much better with the campgrounds.
