Re: Glacier NP..... suggestions?

We were to Glacier back in 1994 with our kids and stayed in the St Mary's campground, which was very nice. There were several other campgrounds to choose from. It's a beautiful park, that turns 100 yrs old tomorrow btw. There's opportunities for hiking, fishing, canoeing/kayaking, horseback riding... Not sure where in Colorado you are departing from, but if you haven't been to Yellowstone/Grand Tetons I would be sure to see both of those parks as well. As we're from Chicago I'm not too familiar with less explored spots between you and Glacier, so it will be interesting to see what others suggest for you. We have been talking about ways to get back out to Glacier this summer with the TD - but for us to do it right we'd really need 2 weeks.

We were at Glacier about 6-7 years ago when my brother was stationed in Great Falls. Like Ken, we camped at St Marys. We traveled Going to the Sun Road. Heard that one of the Glaciers is now no longer a "glacier". Sad to hear. We were there in July and luckily Logans pass just opened up. Beautiful area. Enjoy.

Re: Glacier NP..... suggestions?

My wife and I camped in Glacier the third year we were married, almost 40 years ago. We tented at Avalanche creek campground, surrounded only by other tents. A few years later we went back and our tent was in a distinct minority. I remember seeing the glow of TV sets in some of the RV's around us. We could not figure out what they were watching in this remote area.

The park is not to be missed. Going-to-the-Sun road defines spectacular. Note that there are length restrictions on vehicles traversing the road and I doubt that a car-and-a-teardrop would be allowed, even though it would be exciting. Make sure you drive it somehow anyway. It is a great place for hiking too.

You might also check out the Waterton Lakes Park which is the Canadian neighbor park to the north of Glacier. We spent a day at the lodge there and enjoyed the comparative quiet. I think the two parks together are called the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

Re: Glacier NP..... suggestions?

I've been to Glacier many times and while there are lots of nice campgrounds my favorite is "Many Glaciers" in the north east corner. Beautiful spot, lovely lodge, nice lake with a fun boat tour and hike and it is a lot less crowded than the campgrounds around lake McDonald. Going to the sun road is a must, plan on hiking the trails around the visitor center at the top of the pass and plan for extra time, you'll want it. The lake McDonald boat tour is nice but I prefer the one at many glaciers, took a helicopter tour once and it was spectacular. Don't expect to be WOWed by glaciers in the park unless you want to hike a long way. There might not be any glaciers left in a few years. If you can time your trip for the late spring/early summer so you miss the spring rains (ice cold rain) the water coming down off the mountains is spectacular, water falling everywhere on the going to the sun road. Tons of wildlife, be prepared for bears and carry a can of bear spray when hiking just in case. The mountain goats on the pass are so used to tourists they are almost tame (but still wild animals). I've seen grizzlies, wolves, elk, deer, mountain goats, and moose (up close and personal) in the park as well as a variety of varmits. Enough day length trails to keep you busy for weeks, back country trails for months. Wonderful park.

Re: Glacier NP..... suggestions?

Hi ALL,

Glacier was great...hot but great and the PIE is still wonderful at Park Cafe, St Mary's. St Mary's side was not too busy, construction on Going to the Sun, quick stop at West Glacier side... people everywhere! Took a day trip to Waterton.. Running Eagle Falls was perfect to see the double falls. Also stopped at Grant Kohrs Ranch and Little Big Horn on the way North and Craters on the Moon on the trip South. Craters was amazingly impressive. We stopped at a couple of very nice RV spots... WY and ID. Will post under states.
