Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

Just caught up with this thread. We probably won't have our CI by late July, early August, but we could force ourselves to tent one last time if we had the opportunity to meet all you folks! We'll keep checking for firmed up plans.

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

Thanks for bringing this back up, Kathy & Bob. Let's get this ball rolling...

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

I'm ready to go a long haul but to be perfectly honest after the quake in Japan I'm not looking at California and Oregon at this time - maybe later. (Yeah, I know, I know, but humor me.) But we're up for somewhere distant and July/August works for us.

Anyone interested in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming,or Montana? We love the west!

On Edit: On the other hand, if you've never been to Texas, we could get together at Palo Dura Canyon in the Pan Handle. It's the second largest canyon in the US following the Grand One of course...it's gorgeous and camping galore. They have a play that is all about how Texas was settled called (of course), TEXAS! The play is in an amphitheather down in the canyon. The town is called Canyon (what else?) about 20 miles south of Amarillo. We live in Canyon Lake, not Canyon and it's about 10 hrs. away from us. (Texas is big - "Like a Whole Other Country" )

And if you've never seen a Texas Sunset....whew! Ck. out these pics!

...end of advertisement for Texas...for now!

Ladymc, We will be here when you decide to come in the future and we will welcome you! You have to do what is best for you!

By the by, I would love to get down and see parts of Texas and visit friends who live there. One day!

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

We drove through the pan handle of Texas and it still took almost the whole day. My grandmother lived there, and used to say, "If you make it through Texas, you're halfway to anywhere...".

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

Well ya'll I didn't really think Texas was an option, but hey, ya gotta try, ya know? We're willing to head west to the states mentioned if you decide in that direction.

As far as Texas being big Evan, there's a saying here:

"The sun has riz, the sun has set and here I is in Texas yet!"

That being said by a man on horseback!

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

Linda, you could try for the Nebraska gathering (I can't remember what it's called). It's on the off years - instead of the IRG in California - so it will be happening this year.

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

So, about the NW gathering... I took a good look at Lost Lake, but they don't do reservations, so I don't think it would work.

Beacon Rock State Park looks good too. I believe they will take reservations, so I'll be giving them a call to see if they have any openings for their group site. If they do, I'll be looking for volunteers that live close to swing buy and have a look see... Mikie Likie? Sarah?

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

We are heading out that direction next month actually. We could take hwy 14 home until we get there and check it out. Would that be too late, or does it work with the timing?

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

Linda,
an interesting thing about the NW is that before the quake we were looking for campsites in Washington and found very few open along the shore - we were looking again yesterday and there were lots of openings. So you may not be the only one thinking of the effects of the Japan quake.

It's called the International Teardrop Gathering (ITG) & the 4th one is this year...here's the link for more info...

ITG4

Always a fun gathering!

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

I am looking forward to being on/in the west coast in the fall and hope there might be something happening and that I can meet some of you who live out there.

Regarding earthquakes...Out here in the middle we are on the biggest fault in the country...The New Madrid Fault (I think) runs along part of the Mississippi River. I have experienced 2 earthquakes while living in the Midwest. We had one last winter. December 2009 at 4am I woke up to a loud boom and the bed/house was really shaking. It was a snowy night and I thought a snowplow had hit the house! I looked out the window and no snowplow...then I turned on the radio to a local news station and they were just starting full chatter about a earth quake that had just happened (and I lived pretty close to the epicenter) So my point is...they happen everywhere. Science today is able to see them coming, as they did in Japan, and were able to send out the alert. The current expectation about the New Madrid, is that if it ever went into full mode, it would take out St. Louis....not a happy thought.

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

Point well taken. I know a lot of folks out here are getting things ready now, because of the big one in Japan. Too bad it took a major catastrophe to wake folks up. Earthquake readiness kits are flying off shelves, the city is taking a closer look at the emergency plan (what there was of one, I guess), and they are telling us to get things pulled together like communication plans/meeting places. They have been telling us we are over due for years (I read today that big earthquakes in the PNW happen every 300 years, and the last big one was 1700), and the same is being said about our volcanoes. I try to be prepared, but Ma nature is the boss. We are taught that out here over and over again, with as much wild land as we have. I am not oblivious to it all, but I just go on living and enjoying life trying not to let it bring me down and keeping out of as much trouble as possible. I will say that I am really happy to have Dottie, just in case. She makes me feel that much more prepared. I know I have a place to sleep that will be warm and dry. I can boil water and make food. I like to think she is a part of my emergency kit!

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

Sarah, Well said. I've had that same thought about the teardrop being part of my emergency kit. Good wisdom. Thanks, Jenn

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

Sarah, my wife is going to call them tomorrow to see how their schedule looks. If it's wide open we should be fine - if not, we may have to look for a different place. I'll let you know.

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

Jenn,
I used to live in Hot Springs, AR and my son lived in Memphis - I know all about the New Madrid Fault and I'm glad I don't live there anymore - Hot Springs would probably get some effects from it if it ever shifts. Even New York did way back when...

All that being said here's my take on it all: If I'm sitting on a rock and it's well know that snakes are under those particular rocks, I'm gonna get up and move to another rock. Now there may be snakes there too, but I KNOW there's one over there...so I get out of it's way. I'm not saying everyone should move from the NW - that's an impossibility. But that doesn't mean I need to head that way at this point in time either. I'm a wait and see kinda person - I LOVE the NW and had planned a big trip there this summer, but we're postponing the NW for a while.

As to the Raindrop being part of our "get outta Dodge" kit - it IS our "get outta Dodge kit!" And I'm not ashamed to admit it. With the world situation being what it is politically, mother nature pitching fits and nuclear plants sitting all over the place, who knows where or what might happen? Since we don't, prepare for the worst, expect the best. That's why, even though I love my electric applinces, I'm also prepared with my cast iron...and a solar panel (as soon as I can get some feedback on which one to buy.)

Re: First Annual NW Camp-Inn Round Up!

Betsey,
Thanks for that link! I'd LOVE to go but we're already committed to taking 3 grandkids to camp for a week in Arkansas during that time and camping with friends there while the kids are in camp. DARN!

But then...there's always yours in September! Not sure we can make it, but it's deep in our minds to try...I want to be with other tear jerkers....but mainly CI owners if possible. So I'll keep my eye on your gathering and we'll see how the summer goes before we can commit...but thanks!
