I think my Sequoia is going to have to be retired. The dealer tells me it's going to need new exhaust manifolds and whatever other exhaust parts are needed during that whole process. There are 4 catalytic converters, and if only 2 need replacing, along with potential O2 sensors gone bad, the cost could go into the $4,000 range. Add to that the need for new tires, and I'm looking at $5,000. It's got 211,000 miles, the body's in great shape, as is the interior. I guess $5,000 would be about 10 months worth of car payments or so. Do I fix it, or trade it?
 
So sorry to see your Toyota go!! That's a whole lotta miles you enjoyed with it! Spend the money on a new vehicle is our advice...maybe on a Tundra or we got a really good deal on our new F-150 and we are getting 18.5 miles a gallon on our trips (local roads, not interstates...I like to avoid them). We have a "trunk" with the extended cab to keep items dry and a huge bed for the bicycles or kayaks. New vehicles are made well and have up to the moment safety devices, better than a decade ago.

The Sequoia is silver, and it does go well with the teardrop. If we get a new car, I'd probably get a different color, just so I wouldn't be constantly reminded of the best one I've owned... ;)
 
That's a tough decision! We love our '03 Sequoia too, and it was our original tow vehicle. But, as our repertoire of "toys" has grown, our tow vehicle of choice has become our '07 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Pick Up, so I would say Susan & Alan make a good point. It really does make an ideal hauler for the bikes, paddlecraft, the Yeti, and several action packers we pack all of the other gear in. Can't tell you what to do, but the pick up truck option is worth thinking about. Good luck with your decision, and thanks for the warning, as we are about 100k behind you!!

I will have to look up the rear ratio, but the engine is the 3.7 v-6 with a towing limit of 6500, more than enough for the TD. Overall the Super Cab has the advantages of the 4 door version without the disadvantage of the much shorter bed, etc.
 
At 211,000 mi and $5,000, I'd say time to trade her in. What other repairs might be lurking around the corner. Use the $5k plus your trade in to make a down payment on a new TV. We traded in Sue's '03 Passat(Same issues lots of repairs on the horizon) for a new 2011 Tacoma double cab and added a camper shell just before we ordered our CI. Great for hauling around cast iron collections and camp gear on long trips. I love it but Sue is afraid to drive it around town, says its to big. But she has gotten behind the wheel on our travels with Spamalot and survived.

I am looking at the Tacoma Double Cab as an option. I will have to see if there is room in the rear seat to comfortably accommodate 2 adults. There seems to be plenty of power with a 4 liter V6. I've not owned a pickup before, so am not sure how things will work out with an 'outside' gear area. I'll have to research a way to keep things secure in the bed while being able to support the kayaks at the same time...
 
When we bought our 2011 Tacoma (Long bed) you could order a roof rack and when we got our Snug Top camper shell you could also order it with a roof rack. So lots of options there. Or you could get a retractable bed cover to secure your gear. The Tacoma has a full size back seat that holds three adults with plenty of leg room.I have the V6 and there is plenty of power to pull the CI. We would have gone for the Tundra(ext cab) but Sue's sister has one and it fills the drive way end to end, just to big and the gas mileage sucks.

Not to be biased because I own a Honda Ridgeline... but test drive the Tacoma then test drive the Honda Ridgeline... But be carefull most who test drive the Ridgeline land up buying one!! 4 wheel AWD and 4 wheel independent suspension gives it a ride like a car. Plenty of room in the backseat for 2 adults and a HUGE trunk in the under the bed for locked storage. Great camper vehicle...

I traded the much loved Sequoia today for a Tacoma double cab. While less than a mile from the dealer on the way to trade it, there was a series of beeps, and the VSC & TRAC lights came on. When I tried to engage the 4WD it made an awful grinding noise. This, on a vehicle that has run beautifully for 12 yrs and just over 211,000 miles! It either knew it was being traded, or was a sign that it was time for me to let go.
The Tacoma is plenty big enough for our needs - the rear seats fit me comfortably @ 6ft, and they fold flat for extra, indoor stowage. The 4 liter V6 will have plenty of power to pull the CI, and once I figure out the best way to secure the bed and support the 'yaks we'll be all set to continue with the camping madness.
 
I think you made a great choice. We have had our Tacoma 2.5 years now and are completely satisfied with its performance as a TV and our daily driver hauling around the grand kids and their gear.

With the new TV, you now have flat tire insurance on the teardrop - just throw it into the truck bed, and away you go.

I had a busy day of driving today, with work and licensing the new ride, etc. I was shocked to discover that our city sticker is almost DOUBLE what it was with the much larger, heavier Sequoia. Anything with a bed - sheesh! I'm likin' the ride - great visibility and 'road feel'. So far so good.
 
Yes the visibility is great, you can see over almost everything except big rigs and those Mc-mansions(RV's) on wheels. Also in Ca. pickups are considered commercial vehicles and pay a higher license fee.
