I replaced the complete brakes a while back (2025) on my 2017 550 and they have never worked properly since. I tow with an F150 pickup so haven't considered it an emergency, but I would much prefer to have the TD braking properly. The folks I camp with have big travel trailers and say, "your little camper doesn't need brakes". I disagree and think my rig will stop quicker when the TD brakes are working properly.
The drums and shoes/backing plates were replaced with OEM parts (Dexter). They won't lock up on gravel when truck is moving slowly and have almost no effect at speed. They seem to lock up (can't turn jacked up wheels and hear buzzing) when the emergency disconnect at the tongue is pulled or when hooked to stationary truck with manual cab slider at max.
I have done a fair amount of electrical testing but have not figured it out, so will ask some questions on this forum. Hopefully someone can tip me off to the cause of the problem. I have to believe it is not the truck trailer brake control as the original brakes worked but the replacements never have.
First question is does it make a difference which way the white and black trailer wires at the brakes are connected to the replacement brakes? The wires on the replacement parts were other colors and I read someplace that it didn't make any difference. I am not knowledgable enough to look at the wiring schematic and tell.
Thanks
