Undercarriage re-varnish or other coating?

I’m new here with #195, a lovely 2007, 550, we bought used in Northern CA. My first post after combing through the wealth of knowledge here. We already absolutely ADORE her! She’s been garaged and in fantastic condition, and I’ve been enjoying getting to know her by tinkering around on small maintenance and cleaning. I replaced the bungee ropes that hold down the front cover and found that the wood underneath didn’t have much varnish left. I cleaned it up, put a fresh coat of marine grade varnish, and it sucked it up! Probably could use a second coat (it was not particularly fun painting vanish upside down :)

THEN I watched some Camp Inn build videos on YouTube, and saw the newer ones have a black protective coating. What is it, is it a better protective coating and if so, would it stick to the single coat of varnish I already applied? Attached are photos of before and after I refinished.

Thanks!
Rebecca

It’s been 18 years I would say it’s held up pretty good. I think the new varnish will last another 15 years. As long as it’s dry you should have no issues putting a coat over might allow moisture between the finish if it chips or something.

I know what you mean about the varnish I made a side tent platform with a bunch of holes.. it was fun getting the varnish in all the holes.

Looks good

Nice job Rebecca! I totally understand how not fun it is to varnish underneath. I remember having to put a plastic bag around my head to keep the varnish out of my hair when doing this.

The black coating is applied over the varnish and is a bit a gravel protection. Not possible to apply this coating once the camper is mounted on its frame.
