The "Dew Drop Inn" Chronicles

Just looked at the radar map on yahoo weather for Myers Flat CA, now that's what I call UGLY! It's gonna be a long night, but warm and dry in Dewey, thank you Camp-Inn.

Michael

Yep, I've "Called it quits" several times due to wind & rain.

If towards the end of the trip and it's just raining, I'll pack it in and call it a "Trip".. and do it again some other time...
Rain all the time gets old...

Pack it in and plan for the next one..

You should have no problem driving one of my favorite hwys in Oregon. Having grown up in Eugene, we drove Hwy 126 a lot. There is a little construction, but otherwise clear. The big slides were further north. Enjoy it!

Stay dry!

I was thinking of cubits this afternoon... Yesterday Susan and I were out touring the various redwood groves along Avenue of the Giants when we came to an exhibit that displayed the high water mark for the 1000 year flood of 64, it was way up in the air, like about 30 feet or so, way creepy. The campground we're in is off the Avenue, and the Avenue follows the flood plain of the Eel River, so at the bottom of a rather deep valley with ridges on either side, great for collecting water. It's been raining cats and dogs all day, and so I start thinking about this high water mark from 64... They have a very nice visitor center here at the campground run by the Friends of the Redwoods League the same folks that saved large tracts of virgin old growth forest at the beginning of the last century. So I'm in there today buying a park pin for Dewey's galley, I'm a little spooked what with all the rain and remembering that high water mark and all so I ask is our trailer in danger of being swept away. Well, they got a good chuckle over that, turns out the person I asked was a local who remembers the 64 flood. He said that the area got 33 inches of rain in 5 days which melted the record snow pack in the mountains which resulted in the millennium flood and that the inch a day forcast we had was nothing to worry about. Whew, so glad I asked, now I can sleep comfortable tonight...what's a cubit indeed!

PS Sarah, "What's a cubit" is a punch line from a Bill Cosby record about God instructing Noah to build an Ark for the impending flood, that record was hugely popular in the 60s, a lot of boomers know it by heart, ask your folks about it or just say "What's a cubit" they'll remember. Thanks for the 126 info, that's reassuring.

Just keep checking the "Weather Rock" at the Visitors Center. If it's under water you know it is time to leave.
Sue and I have camped there for over 30+++ years and have never had a bad weather experience. Love "Avenue of The Giants". Hidden Springs is our favorite camping spot. If you have time check out Ferndale, a quaint Victorian town lost in time.

Jim

Yes. The cubit reference was Biblical. Bill Cosby did a famous routine about it where he asked the voice from the sky," What's a cubit?" But my quote comes from (I believe) Mel Brooks. It's something my Dad says every time we get a big storm…"How long is a cubit?"

A cubit is the measurement from the tip of the elbow to the tip of the outstretched middle finger. In light of that, one should exercise caution going around measuring things with your middle finger extended.

As far as weather goes.. GRRRR. We are forecast to get another 6 inches of snow on top of some freezing rain and the winds are forecast to exceed 65 mph.

Yes Jim I've been keeping a close eye on the weather rock, right now it is bone dry so you know what that means... :-)

Top shelf dividers from Cabelas, love em, nothing to cut, no holes to drill, no screws to drive, just depress the spring and place em where you need them, the tension of the spring holds them in place.

I saw these bedroom side table drawer dividers in the bargain cave at a Cabelas in Montana when we were on our way to pick up Dewey last fall. We didn't even have our trailer yet but I had a hunch they would fit the shelves in the galley to help organize stuff a bit. It was worth the gamble for 5 bucks for 2. They are made of birch so they match the wood tone of the galley. I've seen them since at Bed Bath and Beyond so you can find them if you look. I don't remember who the manufacturer is cuz I tossed the packaging long ago.

Those are nice. I am going to have a look for them! They will beat what I am using I think. Thanks for the info and pictures!

Kewl, I'm going to try them too... would also work, probably, in the storage bins... mines a mess, tried using the plastic baskets and they are falling apart..

Now, just need to find a small cow or horse to keep behind the "Corral" fence.. heheh

Yeah, that looks like them Frank, I didn't know that Target has them, I'd try to hold out for the birch or maple though, better match for the galley wood color, wish I could remember who made them, if I do I'll post.

Michael

Dewey and crew's patience was rewarded today, we got mostly dry conditions, some blue skies, very cool roadside attractions and as always on the coast roads, beautiful scenery as we continued on her maiden tour home..

101 bridge in Oregon as objects of art and function, they don't build em like that anymore!

Oregon State Route 38

We are now camped at a Eugene OR Motel 6, we haven't been in one of these since Tucson AZ. There's a Cabelas here, so we'll check that out before getting back on the road.

Welcome to my home town! That bridge is one of my favorites! There is another one further north in Newport that is beautiful too. I sure wish they still built them for beauty. It costs more I guess.

You have made good time! Things should be a little easier, weather wise for a couple of days. Enjoy it!

Had to zoom through your beautiful state this time Sarah but will return soon enough.

We introduced Dewey to her home turf today, we are camped at Squim Bay SP the same bay that our other home Talelayo is berthed in,( our boat is in a slip at John Wayne Marina on Squim Bay). We will need a few days to dewinterize the boat and move back aboard.

Home sweet home

Still shiny after 7000 miles and 115 nights aboard!

There is a rails to trails bike and ped path between the marina and the campground that we walk several times a week when the boat is in it's slip. When we were waiting for Dewey to be built and dreaming of teardroping we would always look to see if there was a teardrop in the campground, never did see one there until now!

When Susan I did this walk we would sometimes make bets on weather the resident eagle was on his favorite perch and if there would be a teardrop trailer in the park, sometimes the former wager would come in...

... you wouldn't want to take the later today!

PS Glad to be back safe and sound.
