No Pressure from Propane Tank

Just had my tank refilled. Now I can't turn the nob at all. Back to Uhaul tomorrow to see if they can fix it. :(

Also, FYI, just had this happen last trip.

Tank empty, tried refill, no go
Tried dropping, no go
Tried another refill (aka gas station), no go,
Went to those "Propane Tank Suppliers"
Took it out to the "Big Tanks" plug it in, pop it on and Huston??
We had lift off...

Worked....
Asked him why him and not the 2 prior ones, better equipment... so word to the wise, nothing else fails, take it to one of those Amerigas or whatever dealer ships before you junk it. Might work.
If not, you can get a new tank right there which is what I was planning on doing....

Luckily it worked... dropping it didn't, tried it numerous times, but believe it was just a stuck valve and either the equipment was better or more pressure pushed the pin/whatever open to fill..
whew... happy Camper...
for now anyway, till the next refill...heheh

Last night when they tried to refill it, they had to knock it on the ground a couple of times but they did put 2 gallons in it. Obviously, the nob was working last night. Not sure what happened but reading on line, this can happen if you open or close the valve too quickly? I tried to knock it a couple of times on the ground but really don't want to mess with it. Hopefully, I can take it today to Uhaul but if not, I have the adapter and can use the one pound bottles next week.

Well, it took the guy at Suburban Propane all of two seconds to turn the nob. He said that there is a safety valve so that no propane is dispensed without the hose hooked up to it. This I already knew. He said there is no need to close the nob so tight. He said a lot of people who fill gas tanks close the nob too tightly. He said in order to get it to turn, don't just try to turn it, but push down slightly on the nob with your palm and it should turn.

By the way, I did call UHaul first but they did not sound encouraging that they would be able to resolve the problem that is why I went to Suburban. Just reinforces Frank's point about going to a big propane supplier.

kewl, Hadn't heard of the "Push Down" thing... knew you had to open slowly or slower otherwise the emergency cutoff will flip closed.
heheh, there's always something but the knowing to try a Propane Dealer as the last straw is good to know for reference. I went to two of them and would have bought a new one from them. and they actually charged me for the escaped propane the tank refused... $0.50, Gawd...
Oh well, on to the next one.. trying to repack for the DAM Meet at Mt Shasta...

See you there Frank and Joan! Laddy is excited you are going to be there Frank! He says, "I like that Frank! He is silly and has fun with science." I will keep him away as much as I can. :)

Yikes !!!!

I have to perform....

Holy Moley... will might have one or two tricks, along with the Pepsi & Mentos fountains....
Ole silly me... heheh it's all fun....

Gawd, I hope it's not my Andy Warhol "15 min of fame" although it could be worse I guess...

Don't feel like you have to do anything this weekend Frank! Sounds like they will have several activities for the kids. He and Mick built a wooden car, so he is also exited about the car races. Although if you did do something, you would have a willing assistant, I am sure!

Good question :). I'm sure the skeeter attractant works less well than I do naturally :)

I'm not sure how the OPD Reset works....looking it it I couldn't get a sense or its theory of operation....

Had a problem with a full Blue Rhino bottle, stove wouldn't light with the valve open. Switched to a 1lb bottle, stove lit right up. Called up the Blue Rhino folks, they said to return it for another bottle, no charge. We drove around Carpinteria to all the usual suspect locations, grocery stores, drug stores, gas stations, no luck, did find a fill station, go figure. Went back to pick up the trailers empty 11 lb bottle. Hooked it up and still the stove wouldn't light. What gives. Sent an email to Cary for clues, he sent me to this thread, so I dropped both bottles onto the ground, no results. I took the 11 lb over to Amerigas and the gas guy got it working and told me that the valve needs to be opened very very slowly to a 1 or 1 1/2 turn only. If you open it too fast the safety shut off valve kicks in. Safety valve is there to prevent gas leak if a hose is cut or broken. Hooked up the 11 lb tank and like magic we're cookin again! Thought I'd share.

Michael

Thanks, Michael. Perhaps that what happened to my 11 lb tank too. It took a long time to find a propane guy that was able to get it going again.

Yah, opening too fast can cause it, but just be aware of the little CampInn bottles do at time do that...

I've had mine since purchased 5+ yrs now, Yikes?, and the last several times it ran out and I tried to fill it at the Local-yokals and it wouldn't fill. Took to 2 different places and just wouldn't fill.

Took it to Amerigas thinking a had to get a new bottle or new valve if it was lot cheaper and they hooked it right up and filled it, No Problem-o....

Asked him "Why, Oh Why, won't my bottle fill..."
Dunno.. but guessing it just had a better connection and more pressure...

So I'll still try it locally, but I now keep it as a back up and carry a 20lb for use.

When I get to the campsite, I'll just swing the 20lber out and hook it up. I use a small heater for outside running from the side propane hook up and it work perfectly without freezing up.

So bottom line is
- open slowly until the needle jumps
- Try dropping it.
- try at the locals but keep Amerigas or whatever company is near by as a backup. If they can't fix, then maybe it's time for a new tank but keep in mind they're hard to find and might have to be ordered.

Now I won't mention that I carry a 40lber too.. heheh, for BBQ, campfire etc.. not as likely to freeze as the 20lber has been doing...

Thanks Michael, I try, I try... just get fed up when things don't work and tend to "Overkill" them just to be sure...

Blaze of Glory.... Yah, I have had those little green propane bottle stick "Open" when I've unscrew them.. What to do, What to do... light a match to burn it.. heheheh...

Luckily in the woods, found a little valley and had to throw it in there and keep everyone away...

I now know, if you have something to poke around in the little stem there, the closing pin will close it... heheh, not recommending doing it, but if you do DON'T use METAL... right "Sparky"?...

Sigh, one step at a time eh???
