Came through the hurricane in pretty good shape. We even got power back within 24 hours. A few hundred yards from us was part of an area that was decimated with trees crashing down telephone poles snapped in two. About 70% of my county(Anderson, DC) lost power & many still don’t have it.
I still don’t have cable or WiFi so I don’t know how much or what people are seeing. Western N.C. is in worse shape. I know Chimney Rock & Lake Lure (Dirty Dancing movie was filmed there) have gotten a lot of attention. We camp in the mountains a good bit & I have family & friends in the area. The mountains are only an hour from us, so we go there a lot. Heartbreaking to watch & it’ll take a long for the area to recover. October is a big month for tourism there that won’t happen this year.

Glad to hear you're safe. It's hard to understand the true scope of the devastation this storm has inflicted by just seeing it on the news. Our thoughts are with you.

I live in the city in an older neighborhood. Lots of large trees, but there will be areas that are no longer covered in trees. Flooding wasn’t much of an issue for us. Most of the rivers are dammed in Upstate SC. Really worried about people in the mountains. A lot of it is already isolated and without bridges some people will be completely cutoff.
It does sound like it could be quite some time before some of those areas get the help they need. It's impossible to prepare for a once-a-century event like this. Aid can't make it there fast enough.

Sycamore Cycles - They have a couple bike shops in NC. selling gear with proceeds to going to help out. They also list some relief agencies Helene Relief | Sycamore Cycles | Western North Carolina
And if you are planning to travel across the Appalachians in Western NC on I-40 or I-26 anytime for the next year, you probably need to check. Both will closed for a long time, especially I-40.

I was watching some videos from NC --- those poor people. The most stunning was a local Gestapo who wanted to arrest a private pilot in a helicopter for picking some one up. He had a little robinson, and was told if he picked anyone else up he'd be arrested. What was bad was a few hours later they were crying to get private helicopters to rescue people. Little power to a powerless man, who has a little power in a slice of his life.
Autumn temperatures have gotten here -- the days are still warm, but the fan in the window is no longer needed at night. My Maple is just barely starting to turn red on a few branches --- this is the beginning. Sadly the grass just went dormant 3 weeks ago, and started growing again last week while I was in Necedah -- so short dormant this year.
This weekend I think I'll put down my fall fertilizer. Switching back to granules after giving up on liquid. For as easy as it is, it just is not good enough.
Camping --- I hate to say it, I got nothing planned! This is terrible!

Just kidding, but it felt this way last night! Locally recorded just were 84mph. Hurricane force winds for 8 hours, tropical force winds will last 36 hours.
Glad your humor was still intact following the worst of the storm!

My mileage for the trip to Madison via Necedah was 20.5. I filled up in Tomahawk with 21 miles of gas left.
I also had a quart or two of ice left. That cozy on the cooler sure gives it a lot of extra insulation. I was gone for five days.
I pulled a lighter utility trailer down to Illinois to pick up a wood stove. I only got 16.7 mpg on the 1,500 mile trip. Of course I was going 75 in a 70 zone. I normally drive 5 under the limit but this time I had more money than time.

It’s raining on my 560. When I got back from CI-CO I left it outside. Looks like I’m going to get wet after church putting it in the garage by hand.
Edit: It stopped raining and I ran out and moved it into the garage. The forecast is for rain all day. Now I can watch the Packer game after Church and not have to worry about it. I drained the tanks yesterday and still need to winterize it.

Trouble with those is they tend to be formerly commercial and have been used and abused!The company I work for has one in the back lot that has less than 10,000 miles on it and is a few years old --- but its the exception, and I don't think they will be selling it any time soon.
The 10 speed transmission feels very strange to drive...even more so than CV

I think former commercial vehicles can be the very best or the very worst. A year ago vans were going for $20K over MSRP with 60K miles on them. The 12 and 15 passenger busses were also in high demand My 7 passenger luxury van didn’t have a lot of demand and I got a good deal on it. The husband was going through a divorce and she was going to get the actual sale price. He sold it for the least he thought he could get away with.I'm watching for one of those vans
