Implemented Easier Way To Add Photos

I know there must be a ton of work involved in setting up and maintaining this forum for which we are all grateful. Has anyone ever explored transitioning to different venue that would allow for easier photo sharing? I suspect that many of us would be willing to pitch in to cover start-up costs. Just a thought. The frustrating thing about the ftp method is that you can't browse to your pictures.

Thanks,

Randy

Howdy Randy,
I'm not trying to answer your questions, I'll let Evan or Ken give some insight, but I know it's really a PITA to do. the biggest problem is trying to get some of the history transferred over into new one.

Some options are:
1. Use an outside gallery as sort of a home base, upload photos there and then do the tag

and you can post them just about anywhere. I do this as it's the easiest, but you need to set up a "Photo base". Then just RT Click on the photo and "Copy image URL" and past between the tags like this one:
Tag is: [img] link

Another option the Admins might consider is adding a "Photo Gallery" 'Coppermine' just comes to mind and is free and then just add a menu link to it. (It's also dependent upon the website's Host)
Then when you post your pics in the "Gallery" you and post a link to the ones you've posted...

Anyway, to move the complete forum, posts and all history if possible at all, probably can't, would be a huge job. The other option would be start all over again and that's probably not going to work either...

Hope that helps explain it. These things are hard to adjust once up.

cheers..

Randy, I'm right there with you. I've never been very good at managing pictures on the forum. I've usually resorted to doing what Frank suggested - linking to an already existing image in your own, separate image-hosting site library like Flickr, etc. I'm not much help, I know - Evan's the man when it comes to these super high tech issues... ;)
Ken

...and also Randy, just a follow through on this theme, posting them on a home based location like the ones above, smug-mug etc. (I use google as I'm wired up with them, website, gallery etc.. and it's free and somewhat protected), but having them on one base allows you to share with others, non-camp Inners... without uploading them at every site.

Just post the link example: Here's my "Albums Page" which I can link either to the page or the particular album or just the individual photo, depending on what I want to do..

So, If you're starting to post photos, you might consider just posting them all in one place and then send/post the links to the albums/photos you wanted to share...

Each website forum has a little different way of posting photos, but typically they will have the choice of ether uploading from your computer OR grabbing it from an already posted, Flicker or whatever, image URL.

Hope that helps...

fun..

Frank,

Thanks for the great tips! I'm sure once I get it down it won't be so hard.

Yah Randy....

Just write down the "Tag" for pics

the "/" just tells computers this is the end tag for the photo link...

I've posted the main ones to use somewhere in the forum, I forget where...
good luck..

Randy,

Great questions! I have never been happy with the interface for uploading pictures. I am always on the lookout for a way to upgrade this, including a possible switch to new software entirely. As Frank pointed out, there are significant technical challenges involved with a switch. I appreciate your offer of possible financial support as a major switch would likely incur expenses.

Up to this point donations from members, volunteer labor from our moderators (especially Ken), and my meager programming skills have kept the forum running. However, the technical difficulties we have experienced lately coupled with my lack of free time to get to the bottom of those issues may mean that we will need to employ professional help in the near future.

I might suggest vBulletin with a photo gallery Coppermine or something.

I used to use vBulletin and PhotoPost, both costing a little bit, but I suspect the donations might cover it.
Coppermine is free and works fairly well..

I didn't look at the vBulletin options, so don't know what would be the best plan.
You could always post a link to the this program, block all postings on this one to move every one over to the new one.

It would probably require a new profile/logging/setup, but once the transition is over you're off and running.

I personally still prefer to use Google for my photos and just post the links to the pics.. I don't like having to post here and post there again...
also might check with the web hoster to see if they have options to ADD on...

Here's an actual website using it just to get an idea on how it works..
It's one of my ORV sites Aceforums.net
and another one
rzrforums.net

Anyway, just a thought... sorry.. heheh..

I use imgur. Unlimited storage, albums, etc. for free. It's not perfect and the interface can be a little clunky but it's better than paying for online photo storage.
