Camping in MIchigan's Upper Peninsula

There are several state parks that are fantastic. The biggest catch is that they fill up so quickly.
Our Tearjerkers chapter is co-hosting a UP crawl with the Great Lakes chapter in August. It will start on the eastern end on Aug 3 & end up at Lake Gogebic by the following Friday. You can join in for the full week or a part of it. They will be staying at several state parks.

Jim and I were up in the UP last October. Most of the campgrounds were closed, but the Tahquamenon Falls State Park was open. We stayed at Tahquamenon Falls Rivermouth (modern) Campground and found it lovely. It is in a heavily wooded stretch between the Tahquamenon River and Lake Superior. Lots of wildlife and they promised Moose-but we never saw one. Saw a wolf, though and that was great.

Have fun and if you are anywhere near Manistique and running along Hwy 2 on the edge of Lake Michigan, stop by the big grocery store there (I think it's Jacks) and have a freshly made hot sandwich from their deli. Fab.

What a great place - you'll love it. I'll second Tahquamenon Falls SP, it's a beautiful piece of land close to several good falls.
Porcupine Mountains Wilderness SP is also an exceptional place - we backpacked there a couple years ago and used their campground for a day or two before and after.
Another great spot is Fort Wilkins Historic SP in Copper Harbor. At the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula , you might consider a ferry ride out to Isle Royale Nat'l. Park .
We've stayed in the Sylvania Wilderness and Recreation Area , great for canoeing and kayaking.
You will love the UP - but call ahead and check on the current report for ' BLACK FLIES ' before you go - they can be a REAL nuisance in June/July.

We'll third the Tahquamenon Falls SP! We were there last summer and would have like to spend more time there. We camped along the river, not in the modern campground. Did anyone check out the miro brewery in the Park? We had lunch there by candlelight as the electricity went off. I don't think they could handle the hot weather last summer as it was in the 90's when we were there in July. Also like Ken & Peggy we were at Porcupine Mtns and Fort Wilkins historic SP. There is an Abbey near there that makes fantastic jams & jellies. Worth the extra money they cost to buy them. The Rosehip jelly was really really good. Would like to spend more time up that way again.

The brain jar said 'Abnormal'. Igor (Marty Feldman) thought it said the 'donor's' name -- Abby Normal. Hence, the monster's brain wasn't quite right, along with a lot of the rest of him

Bob Lake Campgound, in the Ottawa National Forest - beautiful. Camp sites on lake so easy canoe access right from our site. Lots of trees provide shade and screen other sites from each other. Also saw sandhill cranes, loons on lake, bald eagle, and best sunrise display every morning. It is fairly remote so quick trips to the store for ice or food isn't an option; water from the wells pumped easy and was very drinkable (sometimes they get that metal twang).
We spent a few days in the UP when we picked up Always Pleasant. First night was at Little Beaver Lake in Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore. It was early April and we had the whole place to ourselves. It's a small primitive campground, pit toilets only but beautiful.
Being from KY we thought "it sure is cold, guess that's why nobody else is here". There were icicles on the door vents next morning. Come to find out the snow had melted early and all the snowmobilers had gone home. Next day we went to Tahquamenon St Pk, the second highest falls east of the Miss. River. Had the whole place to ourselves again, bathhouses closed so pit toilets only here too. Last two nights were at Straights St Pk in St Ignace. We got reservations there, the park rangers thought that was real funny, again we were the only ones there. All were great campgrounds we were just ahead of the game. We heard that all of them were full all summer long so try to get reservations unless you go in early spring.

We spent 5 days at JW Wells early July. We have loved this campground in the past this time we hit major rain many of the sites were ponds. Our site was mud for 3 days. Also we’re bordered by a site with people not respectful of the land. Dish water dumped everywhere.
also spent 10 days at Baraga State Park. We had a good site where we were comfortable. The Park is bordered by the highway so lots of road noise but we spent most of our time away from camp visiting rainfalls, Lake Superior and beautiful forest roads with lots to see and do. So good to be out after COVID.

Baraga is gorgeous when the trees are at their peak color. We drove through the park on the way home from a stay in Brunet Island SP a few years ago - another beautiful spot to get to if you haven't been before...
