Awning solutions?

Hello everyone - My wife and I are planning some extended stay trips (set up a basecamp and explore an area for a week or so). I have been looking at SUV screen tents and different awnings for the REAR over the kitchen area. We are thinking having the capability to hang out in the tent bug free before and after a day's adventure would be a good thing. Any suggestions? Is anyone using an SUV tent off of the rear kitchen in this manner? Thanks!

What states will you be in? Bugs are different in different locations. There are a lot of great canopy and screen tent options.
Is this conversation moving to FB?

No, it is not moving to FB. It is just that I have a FB post all ready to post for my Friday morning FB post and it happens to show one of the best galley room solutions I have seen. I think it will be important for Don and Deb to see this post. It may not be the solution for them though so lets for sure keep going with this conversation.

Ok. Can you post that here? I'm always interested in the products you research and recommend. I have a fb account but never go there since I'm just using a phone.

I had some ideas about screen tents but wanted to see your product first.

Thanks!
A little side note....I am so grateful to have the campinn family as my Teardrop 'umbrella' group. What great folks you are.

We will be pretty much all over - Initially middle of the country and south. Planning trip outwits (not so worried about bugs) and trip to Alaska (biggest mosquitos you have ever seen). I hope some good comments come on facebook after Cary posts tomorrow . . .

True about far north blood sucking birds. I've done that tour. You can barely get out of your vehicle .

Consider, also, that your vehicle can function as your sitting room.

Coleman?
That's a beauty.

Yup - from Alaska and still have family and friends living there - used to do a lot of backcountry camping - bugs aren't so bad once you get above treeline. Thought of the car for sitting, but really would like to set up a few days and longer - canoe, bike, hike an area with a nice comfortable "home" as a base camp. Thanks!

Don,

A bug free space around the galley is very difficult to do. Most customers create a space next to it that is bug free with either a Gazelle or Clam which are free standing. Another option, which is what I do, is a roof rack mounted ARB awning with the attachable annex room. Gives you a way to access the cabin of the camper which still having a full enclosed room with floor and everything.

I agree! I look forward to seeing what you decide to get. There are some great options!

We love our Gazelle and they have new screening which breathes better. The quality of the Gazelle offerings seems to be better than Clam. We have both of them.
I'm mulling adding a Gazelle as replacement for my 12x12 Northern Breeze when it fades out from sun damage.

I like how the Gazelle, like Clam design is free standing and it can be snugged up around the galley and a custom cutout to fit the CampInn profile can keep the bugs mostly out of the screen room.

Thanks for the reminder on the screen mesh- getting a cool breeze is the whole point in skeeter country when its muggy.

Do any Gazelle models have roof peak vents? Thats the one advantage on the NB while cooking. And for the new Coleman that Cary highlights.

I did not see any Gazelle Awning on their website with a roof peak vent. Living in Florida; I would definitely choose a Gazelle Model with the Tri-Tech mesh screening over the other Gazelle Models with the older style mesh.

This Gazelle has ceiling vents, and a rain fly that sits high enough above for good ventilation. They were out of stock not too long ago, but appear to have them available again now. Gazelle Tents G6 Cool Top 6-Sided Portable Gazebo, Easy Pop-Up Hub Screen Tent, Waterproof, UV Resistant, Increased Air Flow, TriTech Mesh, 8-Person & Table, Badlands Brown, 91” x 139” x 123”, GG620BR

I've got a G6 and like it --- the only problem is it does NOT breathe well, and I overheat in February. I've got cruddy internet right now, does the G6 still have the half panel that opens opposite the big entry door? Its probably not the best for those who imbibe -- but I like that feature...gives egress. I use mine in cold months. I put a a 'big buddy' heater in it, and it gets the shelter up to the 60's when its freezing outside. Not really efficient, but it makes early or late season camping possible.

I"m still ticked off at pahaque and will keep saying until they re-produce the cottonwood. If they ever do, I"m buying 3 or 4 of 'em. Mine lasted for 5 years of hard use and was/is the benchmark by which I judge all covers!!!
