Itinerary 2nd Annual Nw Camp-inn Round Up

Evan is being modest. The reason we didn't go back to our trailers for dinner is because he and Lena graciously shared their dutch oven cooking with us.

Memorial Day works for me. Just let me know when and where.

I am happy to help as well. Just let me know what I can do. Last year was so great, and Joan is right...Evan and Lena were amazing. I was also introduced to my new favorite cheese, which is prompting more workouts on the treadmill!

As far as I know, Memorial Day also works for us. At least me and the Lad will be there, Mick will try based on his travel schedule.

The other thought I just had was out in the Olympics. I think Mewton did a review of a place with some amazing big trees. What was that place called? Not sure how it would be for groups...maybe he could give us an idea. I remember there being a beach near by too. Just one more idea, closer to the Sea-Tac area.

Looking forward to it! And Joan, will you teach me how you put your NB up on your own? I haven't worked that out yet, and would love that knowledge since I am going to have some trips without Mick. Thanks!

Just went back and looked. It was the Hoh Rainforest (and it is in the Sequim area, so maybe there would be less rain? But then it is closer to the mountains, so maybe not). Anyone know more about it?

Well, the Hoh Rainforest, as it's name suggests, happens to be a pretty rainy place. :) It's on the other side of the Olympics, so it gets the rain that Sequim doesn't. I think wherever we go during Memorial Day weekend will require a large tarp for a rain shelter.

Oh, perhaps some night when we are all sitting around a campfire Steve will entertain us with the story of the Thanksgiving that he spent alone in the rainforest--he could not get his stove to work, could not cook his freeze dried yuk...so sad.

I just figured if it was going to rain, we may as well, just assure it, Evan. At least we would be surrounded by wet beauty! :)

Baker Lake looks nice too.

Might consider Maryhill St Park

I have a set up and pics here Going to do it March, first time camping at the State Park but looked good from the road.

Campsite is right on the river, Winery right up the hill, Goldendale Observatory..
Just a thought and also Grayland Beach

if that helps Haven't stayed at Grayland, just drove through it. Looked nice

And pics of here. Sequim

Hope that helps..

Ooh! I like the sound of either Grayland Beach or Maryhill. It looks like Maryhill has a group site (only saw it on the map...has anyone seen it in person to know if it wold work for us?). With Grayland Beach, I wonder if we could reserve an entire loop for our group and do something like that? love the access to the beach. Look beautiful.

Thanks for the suggestions Frank! What do other people think? With all of the suggestions, what are people's top two, or do ou have another perfect spot to suggest?

We stayed at Grayland and loved it; good suggestions about taking over a full loop - some have yurts that might interest someone without a TD. Maryhill is also a good bet - we just drove through but there is a lot to do in the area.

According to Evan last year there were 9 trailers, 4 from the Seattle/Olympia area, two from Portland, and one each from southern OR, CA and UT. As to facilities, he does not think there are any absolute requirements.

I have tracked the suggestions that have been submitted so far and done some research:

MaryHill St. Park, group camp seems to be booked, almost all other sites booked.

Grayland Beach Park, no group camp, other sites already booked full for the memorial day weekend.

Sequim State Park, group site is for tents only, upper loop has a number of spaces but they are only for tents, vans and small trailers. No hookups. We want to pursue this option; we will have to act quickly. $22 a night for either 2 or 3 nights. There are also hook up site left scattered between the two hookup loops.

Deception Pass, there are a lot of group sites but the all seem to be taken or are walk in sites. All other sites that can be reserved are reserved.

Big Cedars Campground, the county park day user from last year.

Hoh (Bogachiel?), do you really want to see how water proof you trailer is?

Kulsahn Campground. No reservations, no group camp.

Rocky Point Recreation Area, not sure what the arrangements are. Need more input from Bear.

From what Evan has said, having it in Western Washington, perhaps Central Washington, would work based on the demographics of the group.

It is increasingly looking like a state park is not going to be a viable unless we want to pounce on Sequim Bay.

I will keep looking.

Thanks Steve and Shirley! I had a feeling we were going to need to get something hammered out sooner than later. Looks like we might be a little behind the ball. I am sure we can find something though. Appreciate all of your help!

One thought: sometimes parks let us camp in tent spots since we are so small. I have done this at our state parks (cheaper and I don't really need the hookup, unless I want an espresso). So if there are tent spots, and they are willing, we can snug in. I think this was the case last year. Evan told them we were a group of tiny tear drop trailers and they decided to open the gate to the group tent camping area for us, as they had had a great experience with other tear droppers (we have a pretty decent reputation, from what I hear!). Not sure if you have talked to folks, or of you looked things up online, but it might be worth asking a human, and seeing what they say. If you did, then we already have our answer.

One other suggestion I had a while back was in Oregon, near Salem. We camped at Silver Falls State Park. They have a group camp site (didn't get a look at it, as it was in a separate area a few miles down the road), but we really loved the park with lots of hiking and biking available. It would just be a factor of whether folks up north would want to come south again, and whether they have space at the park. Can't hurt to throw out some other things. I will also check out my All Ways app and see if I come up with something else...although true reviews from folks here, who have actually stayed at places, are always the best way to go!

Thanks again!

This must be Evan's personal campground. It is actually available and is good for around 25 people. It does have a shelter and scuba diving. No electricity however. It is $53 a night and we can cancel. I am thinking three nights. Is this too out of the way for folks or should we book this as our backup plan and keep looking?

I have never spent much time in this area and would be interested in exploring it more.

Some more details. Average temperature in late May is about 50 for a low to nearly 80 for a high. Driving time from Seattle is nearly 6 hours. I found a possible issue in that it the web site claims that only 4 vehicles are allowed.

Slumry, my post was meant mostly as tongue in cheek although I would like to explore the region someday. The 8 hour drive from Portland for a 3 day weekend is a bit much.

I did notice that there are several campgrounds east of Seattle/Olympia that still have sites available. They aren't necessarily group sites but we might want to consider booking individual sites.

I kind of figured it was, but when I checked on the site it started to look pretty good except, of course, for the travel time involved. It got a scenic rating of 9.

There are a lot of group campgrounds like this that are not at a state park so the fact that this one was available would seem to imply that we will have better luck with them than a state park.

I will keep looking; suggestions are always appreciated even if tough in cheek, however, next time be sure to use the appropriate tongue in cheek punctuation.

I was looking at my All Stays, and it looks like, in the Sequim area there are 2 county campgrounds that look nice. Dungeness has a group campsite and is closer to Sequim. There is also Salt Creek, Recretion Area which is close to Port Angeles. Has anyone stayed or checked out either of these? Maybe being county, we might have luck. The one with the group site is really close to town, but easy enough to head for the hills.
Here is the website where you can access information on both of these site:

I also noticed Dosewallips has group camp sites. I don't know much about this area, but it looked decent. Meadow camping for the group. Here is the website:

Has anyone been here?

One last thought for tonight was heading back to the Gorge on the Washington side and checking out Beacon Rock State Park. They have a group site, but it sounds huge (up to 200 people). Beautiful area. Might be worth checking out,if folks are interested:

Also have stayed at Dose, not as nice as Salt, but sites on the river there are nice..
Dosewallips

and of course the Beacon Rock, from the last campout, not the Beacon Rock campsite, but the Rock itself.
1st PNW CAmpInn and Beacon Rock

and finally... another thought..
Mt St Helen, believe it's the Lower Campground.
Gallery here..

Hope that helps..

I looked at both Salt and Dungeness today, I did not call but I did see that the group campground at Dungeness was available, however, it did not look like it would work for us. It was unclear if Salt had a group site or enough individual sites so that it would work. Both Dosewallips group sites are available. There is a group campground in Mossey Rock that is open and one in Twin Habors. The Twin habors one did not look good, the Mossey rock one did. Frank do you have any comments about these options.

I think it would be good to call on Salt Creek and see what options we have. I am happy to do that, but need to have an idea of how many people are coming. I think I will set up a quick poll and see what response we get (can someone remind me how we set up a poll...can't seem to find that info). We can go from there. Sound good?

Mossyrock looks really good to me too. Selfishly, I like it better because it isn't quite as far for us to drive for a 3-day trip. There were some nice images in my All Stays, and it says it has very high reviews for the campsite. I think that is definitely worth looking at as well.
