Fridge / Cooler 12 Volt Coolers Versus Tradional Ice Cooler

All,

OK, I did some running around and figured out the price and shipping for the spacer piece (hockey stick). For those who are interested we can sell them, we have a bunch in stock right now.

Price is $16.00. Shipping would be $11.50.

We were going to put the plug to the left so there was room for it by the burners. Is the cord too short or is there a problem doing that?

Which one do you need?

Type "right angle power cord" into Amazon and you get a whole range of these with different lengths.

I would start out by trying the memory foam on top of the stock mattress. You can always change things later - but you may be just fine.

I didn't want to get on Cary's bad side so I kept this to myself. But since others have mentioned buying elsewhere, I picked up mine for $399 + $53 for shipping about six weeks ago. I just checked the website, but they're $449 now. Do your homework (Google search) and you'll find it.

For the record, we love this thing! We live in a pretty rural area and travel 1 1/2 hours for decent shopping. We've been hauling around a cooler w/ice packs for the past six years... no more. Granted, it won't handle a 23lb. turkey, but we were surprised at how much stuff we could pack into this thing. Not to mention we don't have to worry about the ice packs thawing out or not cooling down the cooler on a hot day.

Hopefully, one day we'll be able to use it camping but for now it works great for shopping.

Been using mine since I bought my CI in 2006... best thing since sliced cheese... my first unit has a problem with the circuit board and cant find someone to repair it in the US... I am going to write to Waco in Australia and see if they can help me. The new one I bought is digital controls...better then the green dots of the old one. Just a note... when you plan on running on AC at camp grounds unplug the dc connector first or have the ac one plugged in at the same time. It says in the manuel that it will flip to AC mode with both plugged in at the same time.
Also I bought indoor outdoor carpeting and cut a piece that is about the size of the fridge but extends to bottom storage lids in the back... that way easy to pull out to place on side table when you get where your going and keeps you from putting scratches on your counter-tops. The cover for my old fridge fits the new one same as the old one.

From time to time I cyber search 12v coolers. Found a different brand, Edgestar.

Does anyone know about this brand?
What are your thoughts about this brand?

When I get a 12 volt cooler, it will remain in the tow vehicle only.

Make sure it has a compressor. When you search for 'cooler' you get a lot of items that are not a fridge, do not contain a compressor, run continuously and only cool about 20 degrees below air temp. Not worth it. Coleman makes a bunch of them.

We bought the NovaKool from CI. It works great.

One word to the new users. If you plug it in and it doesn't work, flip the power cord (180 degrees) and then plug it in. The way the cord is designed, if you try to plug it in "wrong" it will appear to be plugged in, but it really isn't.

This is the plug where it connects to the fridge, itself (not the plug going into the outlet on the TD/house)

Our fridge held the temperature pretty well, though we didn't have a very difficult environment: it was 50-70 (degrees F) the entire weekend. Absolutely beautiful.

AlCat,
On the NovaKool. is there an indicator light that is activated when you plug it in correctly? How do you know it is "on"?

Ken,

Yes, both fridges have the digital temperature display. That is probably one of the coolest things (pun intended) about the fridge is the ability to hold the temp so close on the display like they do.

One negative of the dc fridge is the display is only in Celsius (they come out of Canada), or so we thought. Once we started learning it we realized it really is not such a negative however. Since the ideal fridge temp on these is a degree or two above freezing it is actually super easy to set the fridge in Celsius. Just set it for 1 or 2.

The Dometic Ac/Dc fridge can be set either F or C on the display.
