Silverado EV TV experience update

So, we have had the Silverado EV about 3 months now, and have taken two road trips. The first was to Rainy Lake where we rented a houseboat with our daughters family for a 4 day 3 night outing. I charged the truck to 100% state of charge (SOC) the night before we left using our off peak charger at home, which is all we had used for charging up to that point. At a rate of 0.053/KW it would cost 10.87 to charge from 0-100% ( which is something you don't realistically do) The truck was pretty well loaded inside the cab and the covered bed, with all the things that some of us considered essential (but about 3/4ths were never used), so I would guess 6-700lbs.
We arrived at the houseboat rental co. 237 miles later with a 52% remaining SOC. So theoretically we could have turned around and headed back home, and made it back with about 4% SOC remaining. However since the houseboat rental offered one of their RV hookups to slow charge the truck while we were on the boat for three nights, we took advantage of that and charged to 80% during the first two days, and let it go to 100% the last night before we left in the morning. So making it home again left plenty of margin, although we made a couple of stops etc, and didn't go straight back the way we came, we still ended up with 48% on arrival back home.

The second trip was to Oshkosh this past week, towing the 550. I wanted to arrive at the Oshkosh campground with more than a minimal charge, and wasn't finding any high speed chargers close to my Oshkosh destination, so I routed through Plover,WI where there was a Kwik Trip(KT) with a 400 KW high speed charger. That was 277 miles from home, and about 70 miles from my destination. When I arrived at the Plover KT I still had a 25% SOC and a little over 100 miles of range left. So I could have made it the 347 miles to my destination, but since I wanted to use the truck as my TD power source during my stay, I topped off to 80%, while I used the rest room and grabbed a bite to eat, and in 25 minutes I was back on the final leg to Osh. I arrived there with 62% SOC, and hooked up the TD, and powered the faulty Dometic freezer continuously running in the truck cab, which provided ice blocks for the food cooler for the next two days. When I headed home it was at a 57% SOC, so I decided to head back to the KT in Plover and charge up to 80% again.
Since the original trip from home to Plover started with a 100% charge, and now I was leaving Plover for home with a 80% charge, I may have made it, but with probably only about <5% margin, so I stopped at one of the only other KT's along my route with high speed chargers, 172 miles west in Cameron, and brought the charge back up from 35%to 80%. I arrived home 123 miles later with 52% SOC.

So, all in all, while this is still an early, and fairly limited experience, I feel pretty confident that with a 100% charge, the Silverado EV Max range will pull the 550 about 300 miles with about a 20% reserve to find a high speed charger, or about 240 miles + reserve with an 80% charge. When not towing, about 400+ miles with reserve when loaded up, or about 340 miles with an 80% charge. These trips were both intentionally routed on non-freeway roads with speed limits of 55-65, and driving at or within a couple miles of the limit.
Those were my first times using public chargers. Before the Oshkosh trip I had put about 3500+ miles on the truck using just the level 2 off peak rate home charger and had spent about $88 on electricity for charging, for about 2.5 cents / mile, which was about 1/4th the cost of running my prior TV, a VW Passat diesel at 50 mpg, and $5/gal diesel when not towing, and about 32 mpg while towing.

While I rarely use it's potential power, it's kinda fun knowing that at a 0-60 time of 4.1 seconds, this EV is faster off the line than almost every ICE muscle car, yet more economical than a diesel VW. But just like the muscle car, if you use that kind of power regularly, your efficiency goes down the tubes, and everything else wears out prematurely too.

I haven't needed to get any service done on it yet, so not sure what that will be like, but I will be bringing it in next week for a regular tire rotation (my jack isn't strong enough to lift it ), so we'll see how that goes. So far I'm very happy with the truck, but time will tell if it works out to be all I hoped it to be, and I will update this review as it seems warranted.

I'll be honest, this is one I kind of liked -- I'm not able to justify or afford the EV cost, and I am still not 100% certain...but this one is in in the maybe column.

I was not familiar with that website. I've watched tons of videos both before and since buying ours, but tried concentrating on the newer model years, and since his was a 2024, I may have skipped by it. Interesting though, and apparently GM has addressed some of the issues he has had, since I haven't had those problems with ours....at this point anyway. They seem to be doing firmware updates pretty regularly to address issues that come up. I just had one download yesterday, and I think that is probably about the 5th in the three months we've had it.

I was not familiar with that website. I looked ever so breifly. $65,000 is spendy. I think that issue. A gas Silverado of the same vintage can be had for $35. I've been a fan of alternative fuels for a long time, I was all in on diesel cars in the 00's owning 2 jetta TDIs, and a Jeep CRD. The fuel economy on both was astounding. I also owned a Chevy Cruz diesel. Even more so! I was going down that road with the though in mind of bio diesel. Waste fry oil was extremely interesting to me.

Until the battery cost is resolved, I think I'm going to be stuck in the camp of "Yes, but..."
 
There has been a lot of progress in battery technology, and in bringing their costs down, as we have seen with the sogens, and stand alone LiFePo batteries in the last few years. The Chinese seem to have found the recipe for bringing these savings into their automotive offerings as well, but unfortunately the quick change political atmosphere in the USA makes it tough for manufactures here to invest in what it takes to be competitive with them. Just when they think the government has bought them some time, and support for bringing EV's to the US market in a big way, and they start the large scale build up of their facilities to satisfy the expected demand, they get the rug pulled out from under them.

I think we could be producing quality, affordable EV's here, but there needs to be a long term plan and committment to support the changes needed in manufacturing, and the energy infrastructure for that changeover to happen. Those things don't take place overnight, and shouldn't, because it involves a lot of changes in infrastructure, the labor force, and their training as well, which all take time, but I think it should happen, and eventually it gradually will.
It may take more of the older generation who are in love with their nostalgia for the old days of fossil fueled muscle cars to die off before it happens, but I think it will. I'm one of those old muscle car enthusiasts, but I think I see the writing on the wall when it comes to the future of fossil fueled personal cars, so rather than fight it, I've decided to support the alternatives.
As usual, I did my research & due diligence before making the leap, and crunched the numbers to determine if it made financial sense for us to go electric, at least with one vehicle, and decided at this point it would. Obviously everyone has their own set of circumstances that either lends itself to their purchase of an EV, or doesn't at this time, but hopefully everyone will keep an open mind, and make the change when it makes sense for them if ever. What I hope doesn't happen is that the purchase of an EV becomes a politcal decision rather than an ecomomic or pratical one.

Or they just don't have the environmental regulation we do :) I'd love to have one. Seriously, I'm a broken record...they just scare me away with cost of aquisition combined with a $20,000 battery later. Maybe I've just been on the short end of the stick with my Diesel experience, and being hosed by big purchases a few times and don't want to get burned again. As much as I like to think I"m an analytical, I am highly emotional in many of my decisions.

I"m also a little jaded -- I don't think we can make a good much of anything here anymore. The enshitification of products offered today just amaze me. For example, I bought a Bosch dishwasher --- super quiet. not cheap quality. I've gone through 2 -- both died inside of 3 years of installation. The last one started its death throws just as the warranty expired - it started getting noisier. Called Bosch before the warranty ended. The service tech said "Nope, it soudns fine..." warranty claim denied. A bearing whas chattering. The $400 throw away dishwasher that I bought to replace it -- about that noisy.

When the price tag is approaching the median income of a family in the US today. I know the world needs ditch diggers too.

The LG fridges -- are notorious for compressors failing. Meanwhile the 1970's Frigidaire that my Grandmother bought, and my Aunt is still using today has given precicely zero problems.

We were a victim of the LG refrigerators with a linear compressor. They are quiet, but have a limited life.

Thanks for sharing your experience and reasoning. Look forward to reading your future ownership reviews. A couple of items have kept me from looking at EVs. Maybe the media has contributed also? At a minimum, I’m going to let technology continue to evolve for now. Father Time may catch me first.

Im not sure an electric car is practical here when it’s -30F. Any experience with the truck when it’s that cold?

There is that too -- I remember a few years ago stories about teslas at superchargers for HOURS not being able to charge at all -- that would have been a nightmare.

Horrible design - unless your are the appliacnee manufacturer he has intentaionlly built in planned obsolesecne. Quiet is overrated as well...the little hum goes unnoticed after you get accustomed to it, and frankly, it never really bothered me to begin with. I know these refrigerators were muc more expesnive then costing as much as $7500 in todays dollars --- but, with the cost of a refrigerator today that has a shorter life span...really what is the bigger value? I'd gladly pay $1000 more for a product I knew that with likelihood it would be the last one I buy.

But we're geoing astray from the vehicle -- back to that...

Still, I'm interested in the silveado EV as a vehicle choice. I have to admit, I gave it some strong consideration mostly because it feels like an inevitability. Our choices as consumers are slowing being wittled away. I think the epitomy of vehciles was probably the 2000's with Toyota being the top choice. Toyota Camry's and Subaru's with $200,000 miles and going strong is not uncommon. I purchased one of those in 2018 or 2019 and kind of regret getting rid of it - but it was starting to show signs of developing a 'personality'

As the EV goes, I'm still a little afraid of the drawbacks, they aren't perfect but as long as I have another vehcile in the family that isn't -- I think they are a good choice for daily drivers. Little less so for cross coutnry travel.

No, I didn't get it until the end of April, so not too much cold exposure at this point, but I'm sure like most vehicles exposed to that kind of cold, it won't offer anything close to it's best range. If you pre-warm the vehicle before you take off, while it's still plugged in, both the battery and interior will be warmed on house power rather than using the battery after leaving, and help lessen the range loss. I haven't seen a comprehensive chart of the expected reductions at various temps, but have heard a 16-39% drop in range for various brands in undefined cold weather, with the Silverado on the lower end of that range drop. This is also one of the reasons I went for the vehicle with the largest battery, and longest range to begin with. Like ICE vehicles, if it's kept in a garage it will do better than if left outside, and at -30 it should probably stay there if possible. One of the advantages retirement offers.

Yes, the insurance was more than either the 2015 VW, or the 2004 Jeep it replaced, but less than their combined premium.
The cost of installing a class 2 charger was about $1100, but $400 was rebated by the power company, (and the electrician was a friend ).
I agree that the days of simple mechanical, and electrical systems that were comparatively easy to repair by the owner are appealing, and I've done a majority of my vehicle repairs over the years, but unfortunately due to the more complex technology and my continuous aging, those days are probably ones of the past......for me anyway.

Pre-warming is a good idea. Many locals here have remote starters and it common to let them run for 30 mintbefore stepping outside. My ice fuel mileage drops about 30% in the winter.
