Update for wifi/ starlink

So far the cheapest wifi I've found is onstar wifi hotspot @25@ a month. It's att and only available for gm vehicles, that said many phones now have dual sims. And you can also buy a mobile router so for about the same price you can go direct to at&t which i may do with my android phone.
The pluses
Cheap, very good reception. Suitable for email.texting.youtube amazon prime movies. Etc. You may have to lower the resolution to 720 but very watchable.
The cons
In the onstar version key must be in and on accessory so only works off of your main battery
If youre working or uploading alot may not be enough.

Starlink
Starlink is as powerful as you want providing you dont care how much you spend.
Reception?
That depends. For Android auto ( Google maps and YouTube music) . I laid the antenna on the dashboard against the windshield and it worked fine heading east and west. You wont get the full 300 to 400 mps but for my uses I dont need it. I had it in my backyard. Cloudy day minimal trees and was getting 180mps good enough to play YouTube on the TV in my van out front and the TV in my camper inside the garage. I was pretty impressed. If you're going to do alot of uploading or watch HD movies on a big screen then you'll need to proper align the antenna and opt for the higher priced package.
Pluses
Decent reception even while moving
Pretty reliable. Can pause the roam version at will for months if required. They also have a standby mode thats $5 a month. Limited data
Cons
Pricey the roaming is $50 for 50 gig a month and $1 a gig for more. Just messing around over 3 days i used 8 gig having it on maybe 12 hrs or so
You can get unlimited for $160 a month
But
That is botton tier . If you want to move up the pecking order it will cost more. So if you're in a congested area and dont mind lower speeds you're set. But if you require faster speeds it can get expensive. Example $50 low priority to local high priority becomes $90 for 50 gig so ...
What I've decided for my use is im keeping the wifi hotspot for $25 a month mainly for my car use. And im keeping the starlink roam for $50 for camping. I'll be pausing it until spring .but once camping season starts again I want to be able to access the internet from inside the camper without having to keep my van key on.
Hope you find this useful

I just got a Starlink Mini, coupled with a Google Chromcast TV, finished installation just this morning. First off, we have a big Starlink dish on our house, we live in an area where there is no internet infrastructure and it has been working well for us for several years. Starlink offered me the mini for "free"; the only cost is $5 a month when it is in "standby", it still works but quite slowly. When we head out, it can be activated to run full speed for $25 a month for 50 gigs, a special deal because I have the residential dish, unlimited would be $80 a month. The plan can be switched back to standby at any time, I presume you pay for a full month anytime it is switched on even if for less than a month. Activation happens pretty quickly, at least the same day.

I did have to buy a $45 DC adapter to be able to run it off the trailer battery, and I splurged another $45 for the "travel kit" which includes a rubber bumper around the dish and a storage bag.

I tried connecting it a couple of times with the dish in different places and it connected with no problem. It does take a while to connect if it has been moved, maybe 5 minutes but if you don't move it it takes less than a minute. The unit is a self contained square, about 12" across, the DC adapter comes with a cable about 25' long. I presume you can extend the cable, it is simply a USB-C. When it connects, it creates a wifi hotspot that you can name and set a password for, all contained in the dish. I do worry that when deployed outside it is vulnerable to theft, I'm not sure how I could secure it.

It works well with the Google TV plugged into an HDMI port on my built in Camp Inn TV, I can even connect to my DirecTV subscription and view programs I have saved with my home DVR.

Nice. Mine came with both an ac and a dc adaptor but no rubber edge.
I wouldn't worry too much about theft it has to be registered to work so stealing it wouldn't be of benifit. Although the theif may not know this.
Btw
My friend just bought one for his trip to Jamaica and all users there are getting free service at least to the end of the month courtesy of elon

I swapped out the campinn TV / dvd player for a smart tv. Has Google TV. YouTube a mazon prime etc. Built in. Wasn't able to use the fancy wooden frame but it fits in the same hole no problem. Even had room for a Bluetooth speaker behind the TV for great sound

What TV did you go with Dan? Does it run on 12 volt?

I understand that this is not the fault of CI that the TV option became unavailable -- I really liked the built-in TV when we had it. Not surprisingly, DVD has become a bad option too since Blu-ray and streaming are 'state of the art' in physical media. Though streaming -- but even that has become a point of contention among the savvy. By savvy I mean anyone who bought a series only to have it disappear due to 'contracts'

Never will I buy a movie or show again where I don't have a physical copy preferably in an unencrypted format so I can do whatever I want, legally, with it.

This TV not a bad option. I assume the plex (emby? jellyfin?) will run on it. If thats the case, likely you can stream off a local server...I hate external dependencies!

yep, streaming is the future with the built in blutooth my laptop and phone will stream as well. not sure if youre aware but if you subscribe to youtube premium you get no commercials and free youtube music for like $14 a month. i used to have google music which became youtube music, was paying $9.99 a mo. just for music ,found out about the premium and i probably would have paid just to ditch the commercials but got the music as well. very similar to spotify and all the other streamers.
amazon prime includes music but i dont really use it. oddly even though amazon prime has shows and movies i recently wanted to watch house of david (highly recommend) and its on amazon prime- wonder so an extra $9.99 subscription. i binge watched both seasons during the "free" trial and will now drop it since i dont see anything else i want. id like to support the movie but dont want to subscribe to the channel. amazon is getting as bad as intuit as far as being subscription based only

Nice! Send a pic of where/how it bolts in.
I've thought of doing same.

You can bolt it on top or bottom i went top. I thought about attaching the wooden frame but would lose a portion of the screen

I’ve moved on from streaming for the most part. These days, if I can’t own a movie or show outright—buy it once, keep it forever on the physical media I choose—I’d rather pass. I already have several copies of Star Wars that I treasure (including the original theatrical versions on LaserDisc, Beta, and VHS!), and I just don’t have the heart to keep repurchasing things I love every time they move platforms.

I truly understand why streaming is convenient for so many people, and I’m glad it works well for them! For me personally, though, the idea of “buying” something digitally only to possibly lose access later because of licensing disagreements feels a little heartbreaking. I prefer the peace of mind that comes with holding a disc in my hand, knowing it’s mine for good.

No judgment on anyone who loves streaming—just sharing what makes me happiest as a collector!

Sad part is, is more than just Star Wars I have multiple copies of -- I'm not playing the game by their rules any more.

That said -- I really like your in dept work!!!

I have a full collection of curly 3 stooges on vhs. Once I taped them all I cant remember watching them since. idk. I've been sending my daughter my vinyl record collection a few at a time. I have boxes of cassettes and cds as well. But again. Never use them I dont even own a cassette or cd player. Not to mention the state of today's music so streaming is fine. I do have my ipod collection saved on a SD card jic. But streaming is so reliable . As for movies . I bought a bunch of dvd's when I got my camper. More when I bought my van with the bluray dvd built in . But realisticly how many times do want to watch the same movies? Back in the broadcast TV uhf days we watched reruns hundreds of times but I cant say I watch anything more that twice now. Except roadhouse that is." Pain dont hurt doc" I've even watched it in Spanish which is hilarious if you dont speak spanish

Absolutely, I get what you mean. It’s frustrating when a platform removes features or content that we’ve come to rely on. Streaming is convenient, but the lack of permanence — shows disappearing due to licensing — makes it tricky for anyone who wants reliable access. Physical media like Blu-ray has its limitations too, but at least it offers some sense of ownership. It’s a tough balance between convenience and control.

I actually re-watch way more than you’d think. I roll with 500+ movies on a media server in the camper at all times. Nice weather? Zero chance I’m inside. Rainy night, or a cold evening and I’m absolutely firing up something I love.

Pick the right film and you can watch it a dozen times and still spot something new. The Godfather I & II (III is straight-up fan-fiction), anything Kubrick, stuff like that, and you can see new layers for days.

Austin Powers, Jim Cary Comedy, or Farrelly Brothers - though entertaining once, I'll never watch the Mask again.

And oh man… Road House! That definately falls into one of those categorries :)

“Pain don’t hurt, doc.” I hadn’t seen it in probably 25 years and that line popped like I just heard it yesterday. Immediately reminded me of “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubblegum.”

Honestly, 'They Live' feels less like a movie and more like a documentary these days.

Physical media for movies of substance, or even comedy that have become very difficult to find. I just don't want to let that go.

Yup...right there with ya. Star Wars comes to mind -- I just want my theatrical release as it was on the big screen. The last time that was available was on the Definitive Collection release back in the 90s. I think I still have it on media somehwere around here, but long gone is the tech to play it.

There have been at least 15 releases of that film -- and I"ve probably bought 5 of them. And I still have to watch Han shoot back, rather that shooting first. Sorry. Revisionism kills me.

I have purchased at least 4 of them:
Beta
VHS
LaserDisk
LaserDisk Definitive Collection
DVD (2004 -ugh)

If I like any movie enough to watch it twice, I"m looking for it, usually at half price books, or the discount bins. Most of those hundreds of movies I own, I paid $5 or $10 for and took me well over a decade to do it.

Sylvox 15.5 kitchen tv 110 volt pretty much uses the same wiring. It attaches at the top .if you put it out far enough you can fold it up when not using. I just leave it down. Canadian compa y very good quality. They do make 12v tvs and outdoor tvs as well but not that small
I contacted sylvox. The one I bought is ac only but they have 3 others that have a rechargeable 12v battery. 15.6 and up so you could have a 27" in there if want. Not sure if you can run them off the usb . They have a usb port so maybe. I bet you could wire it somehow for 12v . The ac adaptor puts out 12v so it's possible
