Togwotee

Novice
We will be picking up our trailer soon and I have been charting different routes back from Necedah to Seattle. One option we have is to go through Jackson Hole, however, this would require that we cross over Togwotee pass. It is a very high at 9,658, however, beyond that there is not a lot of information about the pass. There is a webcam at Togwotee Mountain Lodge which shows a lot of snow. The lodge is about 1,000 feet lower than the pass. Does anyone know much about this pass and if it would be advisable to take a tear drop over it in mid April? Thank you.

I can't comment on Togwotee pass in April. We did it in July and other than the construction, it did not seem to be too bad. Unfortunately, we were running late and with the construction it was getting dark when we went over it. The one pass that I do remember not liking was the Teton Pass Highway out of Jackson into Idaho. I think it was a 10% grade that I did between 35 and 40 in 2nd gear. If I had to do it again, I would go further south on 26 to get into Idaho. Not sure if you plan on going back through Idaho or going north to Yellowstone and back through Montana.

You might check the state DOT website for road conditions. Here in California we have the CalTrans website that gives us up to date road conditions, snow closure / chains / road work, etc. for all the major highways.

Thanks for the comments all.

Joan, you are correct about Teton, it is currently closed to trailers and we had already planned on going to 26.

I have looked at the pass reports from WYDOT and they are pretty sparse on everything but the major passes. Oddly enough they have a warning on certain highway segments about small trailers being prohibited. It seems like they just don't want tear drops on them. As far as I can tell Togwotee is wide open with no snow or ice on the highway, but almost 10K in elevation is getting up there and I wonder.
