Other Trailers

We saw a teardrop this past weekend in our campground where we live, so we stopped and saw how it was set up - we really liked it a lot - had a porta potty inside, kitchen sink, 2 burner stove, when you stepped in the floor was recessed so you could stand up in it. The woman who owned it was a single mother with her daughter. She said she loved it BUT (big but here) - the bed was TINY and she's 5'4" and couldn't stretch out - she stood up in it and her head ALMOST hit the ceiling - don't remember the name brand. Price was great - but the bed was the biggest drawback and she didn't recommend it to anyone because of that. Our hide a bed sofa unopened will sleep one like a twin bed when the back pillows are removed and my 5'2" husband sleeps there sometimes when we have company - but I can't because at 5'4" I can't stretch out and that's a TERRIBLE feeling. So the queen bed in the 560 fit's a 6'6" man - NO CONTEST! Can't wait to get my 560!

 

Thanks for the feedback. Having a comfortable bed is the most important thing for me. Sounds like I cannot do any better than the CI.

We will be getting a side tent as well. It will be on Mom's side and will have a collapsible commode for her to use. I don't think Mom will have trouble getting in and out of the camper (with my assistance.)

 

I agree! I've laid on the bed and it's very comfortable and with a 2" memory foam on top it's gonna be fantastic! The couch being right at the head allows me to scoot up and get on it when I have to sometimes sit up at night (2 back surgeries). I can't imagine NOT have the couch - that option is a definate must for us!

 

RE: RV Show
We had a plumber in to do some work last week - I noticed he had REI socks on - so I asked if he was a camper and he excitedly told me he was going to the RV show the next day. I asked if he wanted to see a really neat trailer and despite the really cold garage I showed him our trailer. He was even more excited!

 

We're headed to the RV show in Hot Springs tomorrow to see some more fifth wheels - we may upgrade when our house sells - I have pics of the 560 on my Iphone and will be showing it off and am sure to get a lot of "you mean it doesn't even have a bathroom?" comments from dealers - ask me if I care! Everyone here LOVES it and knows it's just the ticket for us to be able to travel.

 

I'm still in the decision making process.

I have researched many different campers and keep coming back to just a few: the moby1 XTR, the camp-inn 560, the rpod 182g (Hood River Edition) and the Airstream Sport.

I plan on looking at all of these trailers in person over the next six months. I'm most excited about the Camp-Inn and Moby1 based entirely on my online research. I read a post somewhere that the guys at the factory rent out a 560. If so, I think we will plan an outting with the family in June.


Other's I considered:

Heartland MPG - seems like a better built rpod but it didn't have the galley and they don't make them anymore.
Alto - The lift system seems like another thing to worry about. I didn't like the interior design. It is neat, though.
Casita - just didn't have a good feel to me.
Cricket Trailer - I would have loved this one 20 years ago when I was unmarried and younger.
Lance 1575 - Like the Casita, didn't feel right for me.
Little Guy Silver Shadow - Camp-Inn looks better all the way around.
Cozy Cruiser - I like the look of the Camp-Inn better
Socal - Ditto
T@B - They look neat but the reviews turned me away.
T@DA - Ditto
Scamp - same as the Lance and Casita

I find myself spending most of my time looking at the camp-inn and the moby1.

It sounds like you already have your mind made up but just don't know it yet.

 

Based on what I've read and seen on the web, I'm all set to buy the 560. I need to get my hands on it to be sure, but it's all but decided in my mind.

The hard part is convincing my wife. She's all for going to Necedah to rent one and try it out. She's skeptical that it'll be big enough for us and the kids.

Using a tape measure while forcing my son to slouch put him several inches under the bunk length. As you might imagine, this "scientific" test received the raised eyebrow of skepticism from my wife. I think she's on to me.

So with a thumbs up, I'll start planning the trip. Looks like we are booked up until Autumn so I'm thiking the first week of October since I'll be south of Chicago with the family around that time.

Jaime did you ask Cary to see if there are any 560 owners close to you? If there are and it is partly a 'will we fit question' then if there is someone close by you might be able to do a size check before driving all the way to Necedah.

 

That's a great idea. I didn't see any 560 owners on the map near me but it might not show everyone. I'll give Carey a call and see if he can hook me up.

Though, to be honest, I really want an excuse to see the factory. I love that kinda stuff!

You won't be disappointed if you like quality and have an appreciation for a manufacturing process that strives for excellence.

 

Talked with Carey earlier this afternoon and he located the nearest 560 a little over 4 hours away.

Gotta see what dates we have open. It's only 2 hours away from some of our son's travel hockey games so it might work out really well.

Carey did mention that If I bought one I'd be the first West Virginia Camp-Inn owner. He's a crafty one because now I want to get it just to hold that honor. [grin]

Well, to hold that WV title and to use it for camping, fishing, cookouts, travel, boy scout outtings and tailgates.

If you decide on the 560 and get the first CI in WV, get ready to be bombarded with questions from the curious. On our trip to Necedah for the CICO we stopped in Charleston for dinner and immediately attracted a crowd. One guy talked to us for forty minutes …we got really hungry. During that time I opened and closed the galley and cabin like five times for different curiosity seekers. The funniest though were the four joggers that were crossing the street when one saw the trailer he made a U-turn then whistled for his friend to come back for the tour. Be warned, your popularity with strangers increases significantly. But as Michelle would say "it never gets old", she eats this turning of heads thing up!

 

550, 560 whatever you choose will be just fine. Definitely go to the factory and see the quality of workmanship in these fine trailers. As to the question of fitting all the brats inside, we take our 9 year old granddaughter with us all the time. Our 550 is getting cramped as she grows, but as we have a pickup with a camper shell, we are planning on turning that into her private princess camper. She loves that idea.

So you see, you'll figure it out. As the kids grow, they can bring along their own tents and such. A little compromise and a little improvise will see you through.
