Northeast Region - Fall Colors

Jim and Sue L.

Junior Ranger
Hello there,

Jim and I are planning a month long trip back east for the fall of 2012. I want to head across Canada (and visit some of his family's sites like Lambly Lake and Lambly Crossing, Aeh!)scoot across Vermont (always wanted to see Vermont) to Main and then crawl down to DC. Come to think of it, we'll need more than a month. We'll see.

So, anyone with suggestions on must-see/must stay places?

Sue

Re: Fall Colors

Oh, Sue, sounds wonderful (and similar to what we're thinking for later next summer/fall). We spent 3 nights at Winslow Memorial Park, a city park in Freeport, ME (http://www.freeportmaine.com/department.detail.php?page_id=98), which was wonderful; campsites along the water and just a 10 min drive from the LL Bean flagship store. We loved Acadia NP, stayed at a family-owned campground outside of the park, which was OK.
A friend recommended we stop at Camden Hills State Park on our way south and take the drive to the top of Mt. Battie - a beautiful spot. Camden Hills SP has a campground also but we didn't check it out.
If you have time, get to Newport, RI and check out the mansions! Wow. The term "conspicuous consumption" was coined in 1899 and describes these mansions, built towards the end of the 19th century.
We bypassed DC and drove through Shenandoah NP, part of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and part of Natchez Trace Parkway - all beautiful drives. We regret not going into southern Utah (being from California you may have already visited the NPs there) but plan to do that, maybe this spring.
Will be anxious to hear your thoughts as you plan your trip.
Kathy

Re: Fall Colors

Sounds like a great trip! Especially for the fall colors. I'd suggest cutting into New York and seeing the Lake Placid/Adirondacks area; then into Vermont through Burlington, and through New Hampshire and the White Mountains. Franconia Notch S.P., Conway, Gorham, Mt. Washington come to mind there. So many possibilities, never enough time...
