Craters of the Moon or something else?

Hi Guys!

I was starting to map out our trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks this morning. We will finish up the main part of the trip at Signal Mountain (in GTNP)and I am trying to figure out if I make a stop in Idaho to break up the drive home or not. I am planning a stop at Farewell Bend in Eastern Oregon, just over the border from ID, but it is nearly 8 hours and that is lot of driving for me (especially since I am the only one driving, nevermind the 5 year old I am dragging around).

Is Craters of the Moon worth the stop or something else along hwy 20/26? How busy does it get on the weekends and am I at risk of not getting a spot? Are there other campgrounds that folks would suggest along I-84? I haven't figured out my routing yet, but could go either way. I will take I-84 back into Portland once we get into Oregon (at least that is my thought...I wanted to go through Central Oregon, but it added too many days and put me too close to the NWRU...can't miss that!).

Hi, Sarah. We stopped at Craters of the Moon on our way home in mid-April. The weather was lousy (sleet/snow/rain) and we were really anxious to get home so just saw the exhibits at the Visitor Center (Laddy would really enjoy them) and took a short drive. What we saw made us want to come back. There is a campground just past the pay station (past the visitors center)and it looks like there are a variety of hikes and cool terrain to explore. HWY 20/26 passes through Arco, ID which is of interest to folks interested in nuclear engergy. We stayed at the Meridian KOA which is off I-84 by about 2 miles so the noise isn't terrible and the KOA has a fair number of trees. Kathy
 
I should warn about the wind and the air borne fine grit sandpaper at Craters of the Moon. If you are lucky it will auto-Walbernize your trailer, if not so lucky your aluminum skin might end up looking like tinsel.
 
Actually, Craters of the Moon is an awesome place to visit, I just happened to have lost two pairs of glasses in one afternoon there and am a bit Leary about the place. If the wind is blowing, I would move on. An interesting place to check out is Lava Hot Springs near Pocatello. No state park but the KOA is good and the hot springs is a lot of fun, especially for kids.
