Collapsible Dishes

Betsey

Camp-Inn Staff
Something that works well for us is using collapsible dishes. We have a large (4 qt) & medium (2 qt)bowl, a couple of 1/2 pt bowls with lids & a colander. When the larger items are collapsed, they are only 1" tall. You can also get collapsible measuring spoons & cups but I decided not to go with those.

Hi, Betsey - Welcome!

We have also found those to be very helpful - got them at Camping World.

BTW, are you THE Betsey of Camp-Inn fame?

Around here, you can find them at Woodman's (a regional grocery store) and Wal-Mart.

Guilty as charged! I am also known as the wife of Craig and the maker of all good things to eat. :)

Great job on the new forum!

Here's a tip for you. Take those bowls.....fill them with good food......and bring them to my trailer next time we camp.

Tom,

Hmm...that cooking thing sounds a bit complicated...you sure you want to take the risk? :D

Okay, so , how does Seafood Chowder, Italian Beef, Reuben Dip & Orange Rolls sound for starters? I've been busy this week...

Betsy, I have a Thermal Cooker that I bought to use while on the road with the fifth wheel. It beats a slow cooker and while traveling with the Tear or Raindrop it would be a dream.

It has an inner pot and an outer pot. The outer pot is the insulation. When camping, after breakfast you put your ingredients that you want in (like a slow cooker), bring them to a rolling boil, put the lid on it and set that whole pot inside the insulated outer pot, close and lock the lid, set it in the floorboard of your car or even inside the trailer - no electricity is needed! Leave in the morning and when you arrive at your destination after a long days drive, you've got dinner ready!

I do chicken and rice and a roast in mine - with taters, onions, carrots and all. What I can't figure out is, the taters and carrots are done, but not mushy and the roast is completely cooked! I have a great roast recipe if anyone wants it - gravy included, so all you do is open the pot and dig in!

Betsy,

This sounds great! Can you provide the name of the Thermal Cooker or a link perhaps? And yes, my wife wants the recipe.

Please do post!

Evan,
Here's the link for the thermal cooker:
http://www.amazon.com/Sunpentown-S...2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1266552843&sr=8-2

Sorry I don't know how to make it clickable. It's $68.53 and is a Sunpentown. I got it from Amazon.com. They have them in stock. You can get more expensive ones, but this one does the job! You can use the iner pot for cooking otehr things on top of the stove and not just int ht thermal cooker, so it serves double duty. You can also do cold things in it and put it in the thermal cooker. It will keep things cold too! I'll post the Roast AuGraten Recipe under camp cooks!

Linda,

Did you post those recipes anywhere? They sound good...I may have to invest in one of your cookers. But tell me how do you boil rice and chicken? Usually not much fluid in that recipe, atleast the one I use.

I know with a crockpot, vegetables actually take longer to cook than meat does, so it may be the same with the thermal cooker.

This sounds like something I would use (those who know me know I have 10 crockpots of various size - and yes, they all get quite a bit of use)...I'm gonna keep my eye out for one on sale or maybe from a yard sale.

Thanks for the tip!

It's been a while since I posted about this, but I think I only posted my roast recipe in the camp cooks forum. My ckn. and rice: season and brown ckn., set aside, in the inner pot you put the rice and requisite liquid to make rice, bring to a boil, turn off, add ckn., place inner pot inside thermal pot and close. rice and ckn. are done together. I always use cream of mushroom soup too - that makes it ooeyer and gooeyer!

Betsy,
just got a birthday gift: collaspsible salad spinner, dish pan and drainer, measuring cups and spoons and bowls. These are so clever colorful and kind of fun just popping them up and down!

Pat,

Happy B-day & congrats on the nifty gifts!

You will really like all of them. I am assuming they are from Progressive? I have a lot of their stuff. I love my dish pans. I have looked at the salad spinner many times but have opted for other items when the "buy one, get one free" sales take place. The cost keeps me using my old $5.00 one, although it is not as compact or as big (when opened) as the collapsible one. Please let me know how you like it.

Oh & your measuring cups should also be magnetized, which makes their storage a lot easier.

Betsy,
we had to try the salad spinner - it works better than any I have seen (even has a break) and the bowl makes a nice salad bowl for the table, very nice size. Yes, the cups and spoons are magnetic so they cling together or to the stove, etc. and even though they are collapse they do not have crevices that would take extra care washing. They are going to make nice additions to our tear. I am often torn between the old familiar and the new pricey - but gifts are free and these are fun.

So you get gifts for your birthday that requires you to work more? Interesting...(Grinning)

Interesting way to look at it...for some, yep, it would be more work...for me, I use that stuff anyway, might as well have something that takes up less space & makes my work easier, so actually, I work less... :)

Bear - I am so "old" I don't need anything - so I get the fun of trying out something new. I am a minimalist with a penchant for the clever.
