Campground Book - Hard Copy

We are planning an extensive cross country Fall Foliage Trip. I have a campground app but am leary of relying solely on such, and would like to purchase a campground book. We enjoy mainly state park camping but would love to have, at our fingertips, options for any/all campsites across the USA. Does anyone have a suggestion?

If you're a member at AAA, they used to (couple-three years ago) have Woodall camping guides available for various regions. Lots of private campgrounds, of course, but not too bad when it came to state/county parks. I think Good Sam publishes something similar.

Another option is the Falcon state camping guides (Falcon Guides | Outdoor guidebooks for hiking, camping, rock climbing, paddling, biking, cycling, and adventure travel). A pricier option, but they have quite a few states available - I have the Illinos and Michigan guides. I think they focus on public campgrounds and they seem fairly comprehensive. Each entry has a little informational blurb at the end which is nice although some of the descriptions are a bit optimistic. You might be able to find one at your local library to see what they are like.

We use our All Stays app on a tablet - we don't usually have wi-fi so I'm usually just looking at a grid with data points - but we like it anyway - saved us from several late-night, no-camp situations. I've found several omitted/closed parks over the years plus some incorrect information, so it's not perfect, but I contacted the developer and he has been really good about updating the app right away. Also handy if you're looking for a truck stop.

Also heard good things about the Ultimate Campgrounds app (http://www.ultimatecampgrounds.com/) - and cheaper, too.

I appreciate the information. I will look into the Falcon Guides and Woodall Camping Guides as well as the Apps. Great information, thank you!

I forgot to mention the National Geographic Adventure Atlas (Road Atlas - Adventure Edition) - not comprehensive but it marks quite a few public campgrounds on the map (little green tent icon). If you ever see one (REI might carry them), they're worth a look - last update was 2004 and I expect they'll have a new one out sooner or later.

We've got off-line maps on our tablet plus the AllStays app, but we like to keep it analog, too. We never leave home without our Atlas and Delorme Gazetteers (DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer | Garmin).
