Air Conditioner Air Conditioner Question

Our ac works fine, but to get the compressor to kick in, the thermostat has to be almost to the full cold stop. Is this normal? If not, can the knob be re-positioned or the thermostat re-calibrated? As it is, in warm weather, it's hard to set a desired temp. It's either full on or mostly off. If we back it off 1/2" (1/4 unit) the compressor cycles, but it holds a temp that is almost too warm. Thanks.

The ac units are not top drawer models (the small size) and the thermostats reflect this. The thermostats on smaller units are small and can not reflect or control under a given set of circumstances as well as a larger unit can provide. Thermostats are usually a simple bi-metal strip in units like these and are not fully programmable. As to moving the knob you can of course, however the effective range will be exactly the same due to the bi-metal strip characteristics.

Hope this helps!

Great answer Susan and Alan, if you want to know something about air conditioners ask a Floridian, they're "The Experts" in the field!

Yeah, we are so expert
that we don't camp in the summer...
except for last week at Flagler Beach with out a cloud in the sky and 90 plus degrees...
that Ticla Inflato was worth the $$$$$...

However, our temp at night that night hit 68, and with the ocean breeze...
we didn't use the AC. Just kept our one door open with the screen door zipped and we were good.
I have found that the best time for the AC is during a thunderstorm and you can't open the windows or the fantastic fan because you don't have an alcove covering your "unit".

Where is AsheWolf??

Thanks, guys. The issue came up because I was just in Las Cruces, NM, visiting my son. It was 98 during the day! It cooled off at night, but still ...

I was very cool and comfortable while watching Leo di Caprio in AVIATOR on our latest trip...June in Florida at 2:30 on a sunny afternoon.
AC did its job.
Glad we have it.
