I am about to embark on a solo adventure to purchase and bring home a slightly pre-owned 560. (Amend that - my faithful German shorthair will be accompanying me). Mapquest says my mileage there is about 18 hours (SD to Georgia) but I plan on enjoying the journey and stopping along the way, so I will get there when I get there? Hoping to sleep in it a few nights on the way home and just get to know it. Departure time is 72 hours and ticking down. I have the garage stall empty and ready for it, my Jeep spit-shined to meet its new “partner”, and off to my mechanic in the AM to have the four prong connection changed to accept the seven pin that the trailer has. Sleeping bag and pillow in tow - any other hints on what I should do/bring for the journey back?
    Happy Travels - Lynne

Bring a camera and a journal. And a bottle of wine and a glass to enjoy on your first night.

  3. If you plan on staying South to try it out in warmer temps, we will be camping at Sadler's Creek State Park in SC starting Saturday and planning on staying until Wed. It is about 2 hours up I-85 from Atlanta on Lake Hartwell and just across the state line as the lake is the border. There are also some nice state parks in GA between Atlanta and Chattanoog, TN too.

We made it from Sioux Falls, SD to home in South Carolina in two days long driving a few summers ago.

    Good Luck and Safe Travels,

Thank you for the offer - if Sadlers creek were on the way home I would most certainly look you up! I will be going home either via I 75 through Nashville or I20/22 via Memphis - whichever way I didn’t drive to get there.

Make sure they hook up all seven pins. Sometimes they only like to wire it for four. And CONGRATULATIONS!

  8. If you are going to go Memphis after leaving Atlanta, I would go through Birmingham instead of up into Tennessee. I-75, I-24 & I-40 are pretty heavy with traffic. The new interstate from Birmingham to Memphis is pretty easy driving. I-20 over to Birmingham will be busy. There are some National Forest Campgrounds in that part of Mississippi and we camped at Wall Doxie State Park in Mississippi coming through there.

If you do go up I-75, look at Cloudland Canyon State Park in Georgia. Pretty close to Chattanooga, TN and would be a bad place to spend the first few nights getting used. Also, we started our first cross country trip by staying a commercial campground in Ringgold, GA. We were just trying to get through Atlanta after getting off work to beat rush hour there. It was nice for just a place to pull in stop for the night. I forget the name of it, but I did review it in campground section on the forum.

Haha - I am actually about 27 hours before departure. Mechanic put on the seven pin connector - tested it and all are working- Jeep is washed up and raring to go. Should be good weather, my Maxine and I are eager to make the road trip and see new country. Previous owners are so generous to allow me to show up the Friday of a holiday weekend. Silly as it sounds, the moment I saw the unit for sale I felt like it was meant to be ours!

Oh....OK, I was just trying to sweeten your deal a little. :)
Have a great trip! Take your time coming home, it looks like a few more snow events up here in the northern mid-west over the next week or so. Wouldn't want to see that gem with a white powdery coat of salt on it.
