WYALUSING STATE PARK WI?

We're thinking about a trip to Wyalusing State Park in Wisconsin and wondered if anyone has camped there and can let us know if it's a good spot to visit. It looks nice, but no one's anwsering the phone, at least not today. I'd appreciate any thoughts on the park.

Wyalusing is a beautiful park. It is a couple of hours from us. We have camped there a few times. Breathtaking views of the Mississippi. Lots of hiking trails & scenic overlooks. There is also a canoe trail at the base of the bluff that is nice. You camp on top of the bluff. Here is a picture

Prairie du Chien is not too far away (you can see it in the far background of the picture). There are lots of historical things to see & do in the area, including Villa Louis Mansion (state historical site) as well as a medical museum (some very old & scary surgical instruments :eek: ), & old Fort Crawford. There is also a Cabela's. On the Minnesota side of the river is Effigy Mound National Monument, with a fascinating history & examples of the Native American mound builders. Well worth the trip.

We last camped there with a group of teardroppers (CI owners & wannabees :) ) 2 years ago in May. We've talked about doing it again.

Unfortunately, a few years ago, some of the best hiking trails were destroyed in a freak torrential rainstorm where they received some 8" of rain in less than an hour, washing away some of the bluff & its trails for good. Some of the trails have been reconstructed.

Wisconsin State Parks officially opened for the summer season last weekend, so there might not be anyone available at the office every day.

I guarantee you would love this place.

Thanks Betsey, we'll probably head that way and take our chances on getting a spot in one of the walk-in sites. I'd bet they got all that rain during the storms that washed out Lake Delton - Lake Delton homes washed away in floods - I think the videos made the national news. We were tent camping in the Sylvania Wilderness Area in the U.P. at the time and, needless to say, decided to head home early.

Wyalusing was hit in July of 2007, nearly a year before Lake Delton. We do tend to have some intense rain storms up this way.

Jerry and I have also camped many times in Wyalusing's outer campground also (not the main one on the bluff) It sits back in the trees. We like it there in the fall. As Betsey said, some nice hiking trails. We've also biked up in the back loop. This is a favorite park of ours, but then you can never go bad with a Wisconsin State Park.

Glad to get another positive review of the park! I'm debating whether to bring the kayaks along, in addition to the bikes, for this trip - I've read that there are some nice paddling trails. I'll be watching the weather pretty closely, there's a good chance for rain Friday, which would cut into any outdoor activity.
I agree with you that there really isn't a bad Wisconsin State Park - we have not seen one either.

Betsey's comments about Wyalusing are right on target. We camped there the second night after picking up our trailer based on a recommendation from Craig. I have placed a few images of Wyalusing in the Gallery, including one taken from below, across the river, that captures the unique nature of the Ridge Campground.
 
Wyalusing is very nice. Pikes Peak state park across the river appears to be nice. Fantastic views either side.
