On our tour of state parks we checked out the campground at Sesquicentennial State Park. We were a little disappointed in this one. It was not horrible but considering it is in the capital of the state, we though it would have a better campground. It has 84 sites and the main issue was saw was the site were in need of being updated. Several you could tell had water run through gouging out the site. This is on the eastern side of the city which is where you have left the Piedmont region and entered the Sandhills of South Carolina. The sites had were gravel/sand with picnic table and fire ring. In the Sandhills, mostly pines are all that grow so you are up under a lot of tall pines.
This is a large park but you are in the suburbs of Columbia here. The park has a lot of day use facilities including a dog park. There is a large lake in the park near the visitors center and a small water park for small kids. This would be good option for anyone he needs to camp near Columbia and it is at the junction of I-77 & I-20 as well.
Columbia has the University of South Carolina in it so this place is probably wild if the Gamecocks are in town. The State Museum is there too and the city has a nice zoo and botanical gardens along the Saluda River. Not much older than the 1870s in Columbia since most of it burned at the end of the Civil War. You can see some damage on the State House from the war, look for the gold stars that mark the damaged spots. Columbia is one of the hottest places in the world in the summer too. Congaree National Park is east of Columbia and this one of the closest campgrounds to it and if you spent anytime at Fort Jackson in the Army, this park is pretty to close to the base.
