Question on Curt Echo Wireless brake control

In preparation for For an upcoming trip on the Alaska Highway we purchased the Curt Echo wireless brake controller for our 550 Trailer. I am having difficulties establishing a secure consistent connection between the trailer and the brake controller. The issue is not with the initial setup which goes very well . The issue is that the plug wiggles loose after I hit a bump or two in the road and then the connection is broken. I can pull over wiggle the cables a bit and reestablish the connection but it doesn't last long.

Has anybody else experienced this problem and if so how did you solve it? The brake controller attaches quite securely to the tow vehicle so that's not an issue. It's just the trailer Connecting securely to the brake controller. I am thinking about Duck Tape or zip ties but wanted to see if anybody else had already solved the problem more creatively. The trailers seven blade plug is definitely pushed in as far as possible into the brake controller.

Thank you both for the information. I solved the problem by putting a new 7 blade plug on the trailer side. For whatever reason the existing one would never seat in deeply enough to engage the "Tab".

I had some challenges finding a new one that would fit properly as well. In case it is helpful to anyone else in the same situation the Bronk 7 blade Product id 51085 is the one that fit correctly for my set up.

After installing the correct trailer side connector everything's been working great with the Echo.

I've had the Curt Echo for 5 years and never had a problem with it. But for sure I sometimes have to make sure that tab that @rotus8 mentioned is properly engaged before taking off. Sometimes you think you have it engaged, but you don't.....or at least that has been my experience.
I've also used the Echo for years but due to an injury it's been 18 months since I've towed the trailer. In that time the app has been changed and now I can't get the phone and the Echo to pair through bluetooth. The old app worked flawlessly but reading the reviews of the new one, pairing is a common problem. Any of y'all using the Echo know the solution to this problem?

Thus far Pairing with the phone has worked seamlessly. So I've not had to do any troubleshooting on that end. However if I do run into an issue below are the first steps I would try.
  • Delete the app completely and reinstall the latest version
  • On the phone go to Bluetooth settings, find the Echo device and select "Forget this device" then re-pair from scratch
  • Make sure the Echo controller has power
  • Turn phone Bluetooth off and back on before attempting to pair
Does the Echo itself accept firmware updates? That could also be something to explore.

OK, I have a story for that too....2 or 3 years ago I was getting ready to leave Sunday morning on a trip. Hooked up the trailer in the garage to the car in the driveway. Could not for the life of me figure out why it wouldn't connect. Finally figured out they had updated/replaced the app and I had to download and start all over. I eventually got it figure out and left 45 minutes late. Quite stressful while I wondered if it was going to work or what to do if it didn't.

Don't remember the details but I can say it took a whole new download and setup as though I had never used it before. Quite frustrating.

I would for sure just delete the app, disconnect from phone, download it again and start over.

@JohnC i feelz ya on BT...
Victron app needs frequent check for updates, which requires cellular connectivity.

So far so good but would suck to be unable to troubleshoot odd draws in backcountry, cuz the update breaks the old version, which is the point of digital app on shunt...

Plus Murphy will mess with my iphone some day: Murphy's Law # 238; Technology-Will-Fail-When-You-Need-It-Most.

So I'm painfully learning how to on voltmeter, ammeter, drag out my little book on basics...as the backup, and RTFM on trailer and components, Watts up with that!

Advice: To avoid brain damage;
Just get the TriMetric or whatever analog unit CI offers wired in on the build so you can see whats going on when you plug in the fridge, fan, lights or accessories...is my advice.

Mine is too old for that to have been backfit, so I'm patiently trying on what worked for others...thus the Victron bluetooth app which gives good info on iphone from both shunt and 120v charger...

I'm too chicken to be drilling holes thru cabinets etc, although others here are fearless...

Sorry, for thread-jack...rant /off
Back to the OP: Curt Echo!
