Ya, people seem to hang on to them.
Its the poor mans version of the Lexus GX and LX(?) that have become a "thing" to upgrade older ones for off-road stuff.

I've asked a few 4runner owners or read opinions on forums for "whats the best year?" 2018-20 seems most common.

I sure do like the looks of the new gen esp trail version and looking forward to user reviews on the hybrid in towing, soft roading, etc.

I've got a friend I used to work with. He's still driving the 2000 tha the bought brand new when I took a job. Paid for itself many times over....

For me, the 4runner is step up from a Subaru Outback in same form factor- SUV, with more off road capability, which most typical road/light softroad teardrops wont need.
Used is the way to go, as a second vehicle, imho. New prices on anything are stupid too high.

Speaking of 4x4 tow vehicles- Son has a 2012 RAm1500 4x4 he got as a "good deal"...160k miles and then it blew a radiator hose and after steam poured out had to drive a mile in rush hour traffic to safely pull over...smoked it, and the last injury to a lifetime as a well used tradesman...slowly failing cam followers (rackety rackety sounds lick ticking valves) and engine replace is $8900 for core plus labor...

Its worth less to sell than the repair cost.

Should I junk it or title in my name and re-engine it and tow the CI down all the rutted USFS roads? Floriduh Man has to have pickup, amiright?

But for me...as a tow vehicle...it will have another 150k on a new engine, 1 year warranty on OEM power train...
