Venting vs. Not venting while asleep

I saw the following on another TD forum and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and is ventilating a "must do". We DO vent, but was wondering if this is a real danger?

"Went camping last night in 40 degree weather. Decided since it was so cold, I would leave everything closed up. I left my interior light on, hoping that the 15 watt bulb would warm me up.

I woke up in the middle of the night, gasping for air. I was breathing heavy like I'd just run a marathon, ok, well in my shape, run up the stairs. I opened the roof vent, and cracked the door for air, and slept the rest of the night fine.

Is it possible that the trailer is so air tight I was running out of air after 3 hours or so?"

Other replies to this were YES, absolutely vent due to the danger...Cary, what about Camp Inn's?

Linda we have camped as low as 30 degrees and keep the vent and windows cracked open and it was fine all night with a sheet and blanket. Steve :)

I don't think you could run out of oxygen in a C-I because there is a small air hole built into each door.

    Evan,
Bill's been telling everyone about that hole and I never paid much attention to what he was saying about it...so it's basically a vent hole? I love how C-I has thought of EVERYTHING!

Linda, I don't think they're so airtight that you'd suffocate ;) - but it's a good idea to crack a window and the roof vent to keep the air moving to help prevent condensation that might otherwise build up.

    Linda,

The vent holes are so you won't die, this is true. But, I would still always vent when in there. It really does get stuffy before morning if you don't, like you said enough to feel uncomfortable. It doesn't take much, crack a window open an inch.

And like Ken said, using the roof vent really does a great job of keep the condensation out. Alot of the stuffiness you are feeling is the moisture in the air. The human body puts alot of moisture out when breathing during the night, there has to be a means to exit that or it gets too thick.

Venting is particularly important if you have canine campers with you. A friend of ours, who has a very well constructed homebuilt teardrop, woke up one night having great difficulty breathing. She had 3 large dogs in the tear with her & had not cracked the window.

    Cary,
I don't get stuffy - because the fan is running and with the windows cracked the breeze is CHILLY - but I like it! :)

Yah, I always crack a window or two, 1/4th inch or less, but the roof fan is cracked slightly just to keep the air flow going. Hot air rising, sucking in the window air. With the privacy screen in front of the openings, there's not a "Draft". While it does cool down in the early morning hours, 5 minutes with the heater makes it like Hawaii...
Heating pad & comforter sleeper... 17F and that's enuf of that.. heheh.. c-c-c-c-cold...
