Using a Camp-Inn with Children under 5 Yr Old

Hi Folks,
I'm new to the forum. I believe this is my first post on the forum, but I've been reading the forum for years.

My husband and I are now pretty serious about buying the Camp-Inn 560, sometime in the next year or so. We are a young family. My daughter is one year old and we have another one on the way. We will likely only have 3 children.

I'm looking insight & tips on children/babies sleeping in the Camp-Inn. How do you keep them put on the bunk? If we don't get the furnace, how to keep warm? Any other tips for children this young?

I'll check out the other Tear Drop forums to see what tips they have, but I'm especially interested in Camp-Inn owner tips. Thanks! Crystal

Hi Crystal!

I have one child (a son who will turn 7 in a few weeks, eek! Where did the time go?). We have had no trouble with camping with our 560 and him. In fact he absolutely loves being out. We lived in our teardrop for a month this summer with no complaints.

Here is my advice for inital sleeping arrangements. For now, you might consider having both kids sleeping in the bottom bunk since you will probably need access to them through the night. The space is large enough for baby and toddler. You could probably have one sleep on each end so they have a little room to move. The bottom bunk, which is kind of like a little crib, has a little wooden separator between their space and the queen mattress. "Big kid" will eventually get to sleep in the top bunk. Camp-inn gives you a "kid catcher" which is a board that goes across the top bunk to make sure nobody falls out.

My son is getting taller now, and has a few inches on each end still, but we have started looking into tents we can pull up against the side of the trailer for him to sleep in when he gets too tall. We haven't invested in anything yet, but lots of companies are starting to create side tents.

The trailers stay pretty warm, and the kid on the top bunk will stay the warmest. We have the furnace and use it on occasion, but we also got our son a nice kids sleeping bag. I really like the Lucky Bums sleeping bags. They are kids sized and specific to their needs.

Let me know if you have further questions. There are a few of us that camp with young kids and we can help. We all do it differently though, so pick what works best for you. I also keep a blog about teardropping with kids, and you can check that out I you are interested. The link is below in my signature.

Oh, and one other thing. If you decide to go the blanket/sheet route with the bunks, a crib size sheet fits those mattresses best. When it is hot, we leave the sleeping bag home and put a sheet on the mattress and he just uses a blanket. He also uses a small pillow that we got from IKEA. I think it was a crib pillow there, but it is small. A big pillow will fold up around the edges and make a nest for his head. I wasn't comfortable with that when he was really little.

Thanks for the tip about the crib sheets and the small pillow, Sarah.

We don't have our 560 yet, ours is due end of Sept/early Oct, but we have 5 and 3 year old girls. We decided against the heater seeing as we live in CA and we will have 4 bodies warming our Raindrop. The girls have sleeping bags which seem to be plenty warm for our climate. I'll let you know how it goes after we get a couple of trips in!

kids will love the trailer more than you will...it will be oversized doll house....trust me I have 2 daughters myself 4 and 5... and they love it.
