Trip to Baja

gregangsten

Junior Ranger
Last month we took a trip I've wanted to do for 20 years down to the lagoons in Baja where the Gray Whales go to mate and deliver babies. It's the only place on Earth where whales (or any wild animal, for that matter) will approach humans for a purely social interaction. Although single whales occasionally will approach boats for a bit, usually it is mothers with new babies who entertain them by bringing them to see the humans. The mother would actually get under the baby to hold it up to be petted by us in the boat. One opened his mouth and I strummed his baleen like a comb.

Whales in San Ignacio

It was a good trip for the trailer, except for beating it up on the long dirt road out to the Lagoon from the town of San Ignacio. Really scrambled everything I had in the kitchen and cabin. I highly recommend this trip. There are a number of outfits that will take you out in a "panga" with a guide and a few others and you will get close and personal with whales. Feel free to contact me if you want any tips from our experience.

Beautiful photo and wonderful video. Such gentle giants. Awesome that you were able to experience it and share it with us. Thank you!

Interesting, any "Issues" while down there or traveling down there?
Complications? roads?
Recommend going down or use a little caution...

I see "Recommended" but sometimes the boarder crossings and roads can be issues..
Just wondering..

I dove for 3 days down in Loreto... nice, but wrong season for the big guys...

No, I didn't have any problems. For the most part the highway is good. There are a few places where you need to slow down where it goes through a wash that could have water there during rains, but there are warnings. The highway is narrower than a US one so you are on your toes passing semis going the other way. Also when approaching or going through towns, keep you eyes PEELED for the speed bumps that can really get you. I like driving there though. Lots of pristine desert once past San Quintin. If I were to go to San Ignacio lagoon again, I would probably camp in the cute little oasis town and take the Kuyima tour out to their base from their office in town. It will spare you miles of bad dirt road. On the other hand, camping out there is pretty cool. It gets too windy to cook but they have a nice little restaurant that's a good place to hang out. People were there from all over the world.

They also offer tours that will fly you there right to an airstrip on the lagoon.
