FL State Park Torreya State Park (Tallahassee)

Just back from Torreya State Park near Tallahassee, Florida.
Greggory House was a plantation home (out of business after the Civil War) that overlooks the Apalachicola River. Supposed to have a "resident".
Torreya tree is quite rare.
Our campsite #16 overlooking a bluff. We put our tables away to protect them from the weather that came thru on our last night. Alcove held up good as usual.
Now we have 50 nights our first year of ownership!!!

 

Very interesting about the Torreya pines in Florida, did not know that. The historical marker says they occur in California, that is true but I believe only at La Jolla and on Santa Rosa Island, one of the Channel Islands, there is a lone tree, and it is massive in downtown Carpinteria next to the Rincon bicycle shop. We have anchored at Betcher's Bay on Santa Rosa, dinghied to the beach and hiked to the stand of Torrey pines, it's kinda surreal because the island is remote and not often visited and this species of tree is very rare. I am going to make a point of visiting this park next time I'm in the area. Thanks for that Susan and Alan.

Fascinating. We'll have to visit the Channel Islands and see the trees. Jim and I are big flora fans; so bad we often schedule trips around specific botanical gardens or rare plant habitats. Thanks for sharing the Torreya Pines with us...we didn't know about them, either.

Now, about that "resident"... What's the skinny on that?

A great way to get out to the Channel Islands is to book passage on Island Packet boats out of Ventura harbor, they have a big facility there or check them out online. You can also inquire about excursions at the Channel Islands NP building also in Ventura harbor.
