TD #454's 55 day trip

KathyBob

Junior Ranger
We left Federal Way, Wa on September 14. On the way, we stopped at the Little Big Horn Battlefied NM, the Badlands NP, and the Spam Museum. TD#454 was picked up in Necedah on September 20, 2011. We spent the first night at Castle Rock County Park where we joined Tom Ruggles and George Hickox for laughs, good conversation and some great Dutch oven cooking.

Our first night without expert guidance, we stayed at the J.W.Wells SP outside Cedar River, MI. A very nice, clean, FLAT (so we could push the TD onto the hitch)park right on the northwest shore of Lake Michigan.

We spent 10 days with family in Michigan. The TD was a huge hit and after washing and waxing it, we "staged" it in Bob's brother's garage so everyone could visit during football halftime.

After 10 days of visiting and then rearranging gear, filling the cooler, and psyching ourselves up, we headed south to Ohio, where we followed the Lincoln Highway for awhile and then drove through parts of Amish Country. Bob and the trailer enjoyed the visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH (Kathy stood by her man). The next day was a somber visit to the Flight 93 Memorial outside of Shanksville, PA.

October 6 found us at Watkins Glen SP. A beautiful canyon that can be climbed 800 steps to the top. We only did about 100 of those steps but were impressed by the beauty. From there we drove to Seneca Falls, NY in the Fingers Lake area, then took the NY Thruway to Bennington, VT. After a night in Brattleboro, we drove through the southern edge of New Hampshire into Maine.

Maine was everything we dreamed of. Good friends toured us through beautiful, rugged countryside and along the coastline (3000 miles of coastline - more than the rest of the eastern seaboard combined - we of course only did a small bit of it!) Lobster, LL Bean, hikes to a rocky bay, extensive views from the top of Mt. Cadillac and Mt. Battie, and picturesque harbor towns. We stayed 3 nights at Winslow Memorial Park in Freeport, ME and 2 nights at Handley Point Campground outside of Acadia NP. We strongly recommend Winslow - sites are right on the bay.

It was hard to leave Maine but other experiences called! We spent a night at Salisbury Beach State Reservation in MA and then stayed with friends and family for a number of nights. One friend strongly recommended that we take in The Breakers in Newport, RI. Breathtaking!

Mid-October found us at Shenandoah NP and a drive along the Skyline Drive and then the Blue Ridge Parkway. "Sardinemen" has already posted a great picture of our totally unexpected meeting along the Parkway - that was a great experience.

Well it's obvious I DIDN'T figure out how to insert pictures. Can anyone help me figure this out? I spent lots of time studying Evan's tutorials, but just didn't get it.

Here are rest of the Kathy's pictures and stories....
Kathy was actually doing everything right, just hit the limit for pictures in a single post. (Evan)

We were able to meet my sister in Savannah, GA, taking the tour that picked us up at the Richmond Hill KOA and drove us all over downtown Savannah. It's a beautiful city and fortunate to have a group of people committed to restoring the squares and old homes.

From Savannah, we drove west towards Tuscaloosa, AL. We stopped at the Prairie Creek Campground (an Army Corps of Engineers site) for the night and were really impressed. This turned out to be the first of 3 ACoE sites and we were very happy with each one - they are inexpensive AND honor the senior National Parks card, enabling us to camp at half-price.

Tuscaloosa, AL - home of family, University of Alabama football, and devastation from the April, 2011 tornadoes. There is still so much debris . . .

Leaving Alabama, we drove to Tupelo, MS and picked up the Natchez Trace Parkway for about 100 miles. The Trace is lovely, rolling hills, woods, fields AND more tornado damage. We spent the night at Crossett Harbor RV Park, our 2nd ACoE site.

Pilot Knoll Park in Lewisville, TX was a 2-night stop while we visited more family. Another ACoE/city park, it was very pretty and well laid out.

By November 2, we were ready to head home. We had toyed with the idea of going into Utah and its national parks but the weather forecast discouraged that. We stopped at the Petrified Forest NP/Painted Desert east of Holbrook, AZ, but from there wanted to drive as quickly as possible (and legal). We had to hit the brakes, figuratively, when we got to California, where vehicles w/trailers have to go 55 MPH and we were warned at a rest stop that we would be ticketed if we exceed that. We did hit snow flurries in northern California which made us very glad we avoided Utah.

So, now we're home! The TD met all of our expectations and we enjoyed the cozy feeling of sleeping in the cabin. The heater was tremendous, although we only needed to run it for a short period in order to warm up. Cooking in the galley was fun. The REI Alcove was good to have but we tended not to put it up if we were going to get going early the next morning. Close to 100% of the people we met along the way were friendly, helpful, curious about the TD, and just nice folks. The TD is stored snuggly in the garage but is in need of a good washing/waxing and general vacuuming. Already we're planning our next excursion - shorter and closer to home.

Statistics:

Total miles on car (a RAV 4 which towed beautifully): 10,000 including trip from Federal Way, WA to Necedah
Total miles towing TD: 7,500
Nights in TD: 25
National Parks/Memorials: Little Big Horn Battlefield, Badlands, Flight 93, Acadia, Shenandoah, Petrified Forest
Roadways: Lincoln Hwy, Blue Ridge, Natchez Trace, Route 66
Cheapest gas: 3.189/gal in Grand Ledge, MI
Most expensive gas: 4.49/gal in Ludlow, CA
Cheapest breakfasts: Lyle's in Greensboro, AL; Andy's in Magnolia, AR; Longhorn Cafe, Bowie, TX

Thanks, Kathy

Kathy,
I am not too good at getting pictures posted - I have to re-learn it each time I try to post them. But, I would try to add .jpg to the end of the copied text that goes in between the [\\img] things. If that doesn't do it, then it's going to have to go to Evan or someone who really knows...

EDIT: That's it! I tried it with one of your images, and it works:

Here's your text:

I eliminated the last / (marked in red above) and replaced it with .jpg

Despite my best efforts, I can't tweak the last eight pictures. I'll give it another try when I'm less frustrated. Thanks for all your help and advice, Ken and Jen. Kathy

Bob & Kathy,
Looks like you have them uploaded already to an album, so why not just post the link to the album...

Kathy,

Doesn't matter to me if you uploaded the photos correctly or not, they were great and I loved hearing about your journey!
Deb

Kathy and Bob,
what a wonderful trip. I found your shutterfly pictures they are beautiful. I especially like the look on your faces it says everything about having a Camp-Inn and hitting the road.
Thank you.

Evan! Thanks for fixing the post. Appreciate your taking the time to do that.

Now that I've successfully added our travel map, thanks to your support, I have a question: how does one reduce the pixels of a picture to the recommended size (640x640?)

Wow, with the map displayed, the magnitude of your trip is quite feat. I sure enjoyed our so brief visit.

thanks, George. We really enjoyed our visit with you. Be sure to let us know if you're in our area. Kathy
