We left Federal Way, Wa on September 14. On the way, we stopped at the Little Big Horn Battlefied NM, the Badlands NP, and the Spam Museum. TD#454 was picked up in Necedah on September 20, 2011. We spent the first night at Castle Rock County Park where we joined Tom Ruggles and George Hickox for laughs, good conversation and some great Dutch oven cooking.
Our first night without expert guidance, we stayed at the J.W.Wells SP outside Cedar River, MI. A very nice, clean, FLAT (so we could push the TD onto the hitch)park right on the northwest shore of Lake Michigan.
We spent 10 days with family in Michigan. The TD was a huge hit and after washing and waxing it, we "staged" it in Bob's brother's garage so everyone could visit during football halftime.
After 10 days of visiting and then rearranging gear, filling the cooler, and psyching ourselves up, we headed south to Ohio, where we followed the Lincoln Highway for awhile and then drove through parts of Amish Country. Bob and the trailer enjoyed the visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH (Kathy stood by her man). The next day was a somber visit to the Flight 93 Memorial outside of Shanksville, PA.
October 6 found us at Watkins Glen SP. A beautiful canyon that can be climbed 800 steps to the top. We only did about 100 of those steps but were impressed by the beauty. From there we drove to Seneca Falls, NY in the Fingers Lake area, then took the NY Thruway to Bennington, VT. After a night in Brattleboro, we drove through the southern edge of New Hampshire into Maine.
Maine was everything we dreamed of. Good friends toured us through beautiful, rugged countryside and along the coastline (3000 miles of coastline - more than the rest of the eastern seaboard combined - we of course only did a small bit of it!) Lobster, LL Bean, hikes to a rocky bay, extensive views from the top of Mt. Cadillac and Mt. Battie, and picturesque harbor towns. We stayed 3 nights at Winslow Memorial Park in Freeport, ME and 2 nights at Handley Point Campground outside of Acadia NP. We strongly recommend Winslow - sites are right on the bay.
It was hard to leave Maine but other experiences called! We spent a night at Salisbury Beach State Reservation in MA and then stayed with friends and family for a number of nights. One friend strongly recommended that we take in The Breakers in Newport, RI. Breathtaking!
Mid-October found us at Shenandoah NP and a drive along the Skyline Drive and then the Blue Ridge Parkway. "Sardinemen" has already posted a great picture of our totally unexpected meeting along the Parkway - that was a great experience.
