Water Tanks Tank Size Question

Biggie

Novice
How big is the fresh water and the gray water holding tank for the sink on the 550? Do most owners also have a hot water heater (and find it useful) or just do without and heat water on the stove? Thank you!

The fresh and gray water tanks are 8 gallons each. This can last you anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks or more - depending on how conservative you are, and also on whether you are getting your hot water from the sink (by boiling it) or not.

We have the optional Coleman water heater. For the first year we never used it because my wife didn't see the point - after all if you needed hot water you could just boil it. But, after I set it up once and she got used to the convenience of instant hot water, it has become a standard part of our equipment list. We connect the Coleman to the trailer's propane (rather than using 1 gallon LP bottles), but we don't use the trailer's water supply.
Instead, I fill up the Coleman 5-gallon container at the campsite. Since this needs refilled about every other day, it means the fresh water tank will last MUCH longer. (I would guess that 80% to 90% of water usage while camping is for cleaning.)
Also, since your hot water supply gets to sit out in the sun, the Coleman is able to heat it much hotter.

We love the Coleman, but it doesn't go everywhere with us. Along with the side tent, 10 x 10 pop-up, lounge chairs, etc, I would only use it when we will be camped in the same place for 2 or more nights. Road trips have a completely different set of gear...

I think the water tanks are 6 gal.and we do without a hot water heater and use the stove or electric pot for hot water. :)

According to the Camp-Inn web site both the gray water and water tanks are supposed to be eight gallons. Because we always go through water so quickly, we have always wondered if that was correct. It does seem like I can put eight gallons in but perhaps trailer is drinking some of it.

I figure around two gallons per person per day for drinking, cooking and washing. It would be interesting to see what other’s water mileage is.

Thanks for the replies! This gives me a good idea as to what we can expect. I may be getting ahead of myself, as we are first renting a 550 next weekend, but I am imagining various camping scenarios with the 550 in my mind already and questions are popping up. I'll try to be patient until we actually can experience one in person, as I'm sure a lot of my questions can be answered then. I can hardly wait!!! - Julie

Speaking of tanks, does anyone know the empty weight of the 11 gal propane tank?
Mike

I believe the empty weight will be 13.7 pounds. On your tank, look for 'TW'- tare weight. That should be the weight of the tank empty.
