Summer plans

Discussion in 'Trip Planning' started by Warren Mary Ellen, May 13, 2015.

  1. We have a second weekend trip planned Memorial Day weekend while I go do a cycling event to get us some more practice using our 560. Our summer plans are to head west hopefully to Yellowstone/Grand Tetons and to Glacier. I have some relatives in Spokane, WA and McCall, ID and we may get together, not sure if we will get to their cities or if they will meet up with us on the road.

Anybody have advice/ preferences on campgrounds, things to do, things to avoid, etc. in those areas. Also, any advice on a cross country trip would be appreciated as we traveling from SC so we have some miles to cover coming & going. We are little late planning but we had to wait on our daughter's summer plans to be finalized. We will be traveling in June.
    Thanks.

    Hi Warren and Mary,
Your trip out west sounds wonderful. I can't wait until we have more time to make big trips like that. We pick up our 560 on Tues. and are looking forward to camping with it. Can't wait to hear how your trip out west went. Have fun getting use to your 560.

    Went horsback riding in McCall

Then headed north to Riggins Id on the Salmon River- Hells Canyon area

Out of Riggins we got on a Flat bottom Jet boat ride on the Snake and also white water rafting.
We did not go on this jet boat ride, we found a local boat ride outfit in Riggins.

I am not sure what your interests are but there is alot to do in the area.

Have you decided on a direction? Are you going through Yellowstone?

  4. Trying to get to Yellowstone, grand Tetons and Glacier NPs. Thanks for the suggestions. We may get over to McCall to see one of my cousins or meet up with them closer to Yellowstone. We have a teenage daughter so horseback riding will happen somewhere.

I would love to take my bike but it will probably stay here in SC. Road bicycle not motorcycle.

My family has never been to any of these parks and none of us have been to Glacier. I have been to the other two parks but it has been over twenty years.

    Hello Warren and Mary!

I'm work-camping up at Yellowstone this summer at the Old Faithful visitor center. Stop in an say "hi" if you visit that part of the park, I'll be in the bookstore. :)

BeckylO - travel out west most every year - have been trying to learn more about work-camping jobs at the parks - where did you apply through? That is something I'd like to do sometime in the future.

    Thanks

  7. Just booked a few nights at Bridge Bay Campground, so we will definitely be coming to Old Faithful.

RGupnorth - I usehttp://www.coolworks.com/ (free) andhttp://www.workamper.com/ (subscription) to find my summer national park jobs. You can start searching for summer work in the parks as early as November the year before, and I definitely recommend applying early for the biggest selection of parks and jobs.

(note: The place I'm at now in Yellowstone has a shower house/bathroom in the employee campground, so you could theoretically work-camp in a Camp-Inn here, but some places don't. Plus it's snowed a couple times, not great for an outdoor kitchen.)

If you're looking for more detail, you can check out the blog post I wrote about it here:http://www.interstellarorchard.com/2013/04/05/working-at-national-parks-for-rvers/

Becky - Thanks for the information - Enjoy your summer - that is once it starts - usually get a later start at higher altitude.

  14. We have nights booked at St. Mary and Fish Creek campgrounds in Glacier NP. We will also try to get in a few nights at Many Glacier also. First we will be in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons NP. After that we will be in Spokane , WA but will be staying with relatives there.

Now I have to figure out our route and where we will camp on the way to Colter Bay in the Tetons. Plus a route back home to SC. As soon I get released from school on the last we will head and hopefullyy get through Atlanta ahead of rush hour.
