Well, it's too late. We decided to go to the badlands this summer. My only requirement was I had to have trees at the camp site, and KOA style camping was out of the question....I hate being shved between two class As with 20 feet of width...

Well it was last minute, and I was able to find what I beleive was the last spot in custer state park....so beggars can't be choosers. Does anyone have experience at sylvan lake?

I am surprised at how few camp sites they have! 30!? I think our smallest state park here in indiana has probably twice that...

Can't wait! Are there restrictions forbidding all trailers on needles pkwy? I saw 8 ft wide tunnels...that might be a little cozy....

We've done the Needles several times with our teardrop & had no problems. The 8 ft. wide tunnels are single lane, so vehicles take turns going through.

And if this guy made it through (yikes!), you will easily be able to do it.

When Reading Signs Is a Good Idea...

Oh, and you should do the Needles counterclockwise. That way, Mount Rushmore will be framed by the tunnel in your windshield, rather than in your rear view mirror.

Have fun!

That video is as famous as the bus going through the tunnel :). Psychology will probably make the trip harder than technically difficult. I just am making sure there are no real problems legal or technical.

I've been to South Dakota before, but that was 1999, and that was motorcycle based, and spending most of my time between wall, sturgis, deadwood and devils tower. Well be visiting most of those Same places, but we'll be taking a little more time.

I can't wait for this one :) I'm still amazed I could find a camping spot in the height of the tourism season at a park that appears to be absolutely beautiful!

I just hope the site we have has shade....last time I was out there, I asked for directions, the cashier at the gas station said "go about 30 miles that way, at the tree turn right...you can't miss it."

Story is made up, but the facts are true....most of South Dakota is as flat as a billiard table, and trees are in short supply. We've got AC and a canopy, but parking on a grassy parking lot is not my idea of a good time.

I need to order screens before too long :). The skeeters will suck you dry there too...
