We left CICO and headed straight up to Union Bay campground in the Porcupine Mtn. Wilderness Area, on the shores of Gitche Gumee. The colors there were at their peak, and the weather was perfect - 60's during the day and lower 40's at night, the sound of waves hitting the slate rock shore lulling us to sleep each night. We didn't need lulling, though, as we did some major hiking and even got out for a night of backcountry camping (sans teardrop).
We stayed in the Union Bay campground. They said the bathrooms/showers are usually kept open until mid October, and then 'weather permitting'. The facilities were in excellent shape. Every site has an electric hookup.
    A great spot.

Just beautiful, Ken & Peggy. We had hoped to stop there pre CI-CO but wanted to get closer to Necedah before stopping for the night. Hopefully next year. Kathy

Ken, oh horrors - you slept in a tent! Will you need therapy?

You certainly did hit the peak! From I hear, there is now snow in the U.P.! Thank you for sharing the beautiful pictures.

Thanks, just about everywhere in the U.P. we've seen has been worthy of a week or more of exploring. We heard there were areas that got some snow the day we left, and friends who happened to be in the same general area posted pics on FB the next day with quite a bit of snow on the ground. I'd guess a lot of the leaves have lost their grip at this point. Evan, you meant 'more therapy', right??

This is a 6 image panorama at the Lake of the Clouds overlook at the start of our back country hike.
