Our First Campout

We went on our 1st campout at Perrot State Park in WI (near Trempealeau). Marvelous, Wonderful, Great, Awesome. . .

We had 1 night at 56 degrees (we were plenty warm), 1 at 80 degrees (our fantastic fan kept us cool) , and 1 with a thunder storm. We kept the fantastic fan open just enough to run and kept dry and cool. So a good test of our sleeping quarters.

No bug problems but lots of seeds falling from the trees so Marty’s suggestion to get the red brush (can’t think of it's name right now) was really good. Thanks Marty! It did the job very well.

As senior single women and long time tent campers: we decided we do not want to make up the bed but instead use our sleeping sacks (or bags if it’s cold) -- Works great. I had purchased a mattress cover that is made of upholstery material – and that worked wonderfully. It is heavy enough material that we could just sweep off dog hair, sand or tree seeds with a little coleman broom. It looks really cool. I hope to be able to add some picture (have not tried that yet).

We got the side tent up with not much difficulty. We assume the tent loops that are closest to the trailer do not get tent pegs but the middle loops do – is that correct? I think it would be a good idea to have a peg loop at the center front. We didn’t have the floor tight enough so we had to hold the floor down to open the zippers. We did not have time to do the seam sealer before we left so we did get a couple of small puddles in the tent.

We were amazed at how much open space we had in our cabinets in the cabin and galley. We took more than we needed and did not have time to organize very well and still had open space.

We might want to buy a couple of the cup holders for in the cabin and we have to get a paper towel hanger, knife block and maybe a couple of hooks for towels in the galley. And the garbage bag was always on the move so we need to figure that out.

We bought an easy up – but we did not take it and are going to return it as it is not easy for us – too heavy. So we think we will look at the gazebos that go up more like a tent. Any one have a suggestion? Something light weight, with screens and wind flaps that could be pulled over the galley if needed.

We had a really nice private campsite – except I think we were the talk of the campground. We gave out 8 brochures with extended tours. We gave several mini tours and had lots (too many to count) of comments from walkers, bikers, cars, all moving slowly past with craned necks. All with smiles and positive comments except one that was “it’s a won a bee”. One person we met walking said: “pretty cool – I googled it”.

We had a little trouble with the small wheel wanting to run side ways instead of forward. We have a bit of a gap between the garage floor and the driveway and it dropped in because it turned sideways – that was a bit of a challenge but we jacked it up with some wood and got out. At the campground it also wanted to go sideways and dig into the dirt. We will try greaseing it and see if that helps.

All in all a wonderful first campout in our Suite Retreat.

Way to go ladies!!
What is the red brush??
I'm still trying to sort out what to do with the trash......We have an extended trip coming up, so perhaps a solution will make itself known.

Our big shelter is more along the lines of a dome tent with shock cords. We chose it because it is lighter, and taller in the center. However, it can fly with the wind if not tied down well!!!

Glad to hear your trip went so well - we will have to check out that campground.
The red brush Marty recommends is a California Duster California Car Duster , and it does work great.
CampInn sells a garbage bag holder called a Bagalot,

If you put some thick grease (bearing or axle grease works well) on the jack it should solve your wheel problem. You should put a limited amount on the 'lower' part of the jack that cranks up into the 'upper' part.
And you're right about the tent loops - the rear set don't get used, it's the middle ones where the poles sit next to.

Pat if you run across a good screen tent that works let us know. We have been researching for the last year or so for something just right. We had an easy up 12 x 12, heavy, with sidewalls until a year ago when a Colorado wind storm took it. Now we are using another easy up but really would like a screened in one to put over the back end. We like to have our doors also to be able to open inside. Problem with easy ups is that they seem to collect water when it rains.

Target is selling a decent 10x10 Coleman that comes with a full screen setup.

I agree with Tina...EZ Ups & all the EZ Up-like-brands, are heavy. The 10x10 ones are the lightest but are a bit snug on space and are not easy at all for one person (especially when you're vertically challenged) to put up (although I have done it). And the older I get, the more difficult it is...

Although I know some have, we've never had a problem with our current one collecting water. I think part of it depends on the size, the style (rounded top ones do better) & whether or not it is a true EZ Up.

So, yes, it would be nice if they had a lighter weight version that had optional screens/sidewalls. Anyone have one?

I have a "1st UP", from W....... It is nice and lite, and I added the side walls. I will be getting the screen walls next. I use mine for my cooking area. Can be put up and lowered by myself. Easier with 2 though.
