Oconee Week

Second trip of 2021 is in the books and that equals our 2020 output at least outside of our own backyard. Jeremiah camped 4 nights at Oconee State Park in the mountains of SC alongside another Camp Inn, Oconee Bell. We had two of the best sites in #24 & #25 on the Lake Loop there. Got in some hiking on the Oconee Trail and the Old Water Wheel Trail. This was a CCC built park and the wheel was once how they generated power. Today the wheel itself is closer to the campground, but you can still the stone work that originally held it.

Oconee Bell is also a rare flower that only grows in a small area of the SC/NC mountains. This park has a small stand of them along one of the trails. Other than other walks and short hikes, we mostly hung out at the campsite. Shared meals each night with our neighbors in our Camp Inn gathering of two units.

Some of the trails here are being converted to mountain bike trails so you can connect to the new Stumphouse Mountain Bike Park that has opened nearby. The bike ride I have mentioned on here that I help put on has donated some of proceeds to this. It has improved the trails in here too. This project is part of the Palmetto Trail which starts up here in the mountains and makes it way across the state to the coast.

We’re sorry we missed out on being the 3rd CampInn there when you were. Our hopes are to be there next April! The pictures look beautiful.
