North Carolina

hiadventurer

Junior Ranger
We have a daughter and son in law who live in Jacksonville NC. He is a Marine at Camp La Juen. In the planning stages for a week trip with the 560 to the area staying 4-5 nights in October. Would like to stay in area or go south toward Myrtle Beach. Any thoughts/experiances things to do or suggestions would be appriciated. Thanks R

Huntington Beach State Park is a nice nice. A little south of Myrtle Beach between Murrells Inlet and Georgetown. There is also Myrtle Beach State Park too. There are a lot of commercial ones also but you mostly find big rigs in those. Huntington Beach gives short drives to the Myrtle Beach area but Georgetown and Charleston are great places on the Carolina coast. Go to Hemingway, SC to Scott's BBQ. It is worth the drive. Murrells Inlet is known for its seafood. North of Myrtle Beach is a town called Little River, SC. You can eat on the Intercoastal Waterway. October is nice to be in that area.

Our oldest son was a Marine and stationed at Camp Lejeune 2009-2012. We made 3 road trips out there from Texas & DH flew out twice. We didn't get our 560 until after he was already out of the service, but we did haul our Hi-Lo camper all 1300 miles out there in August 2010 on a spur of the moment (totally unplanned/budgeted for) trip when he was deployed a month early & his pre-deployment leave to come home was cancelled. We stayed in the campground on the beach right on base for the week. It was really convenient for us to be able to spend the most time with him (he lived on base) and it was pretty inexpensive back then (about $15 a night).....looks like they have raised the price since our visit.

There is a catch though.....the reservation can only be booked by an active duty or retired military member....so your Marine would have to make the reservation.

All the other times we visited, we booked a vacation home on Emerald Isle (about 20-30 minutes east of Lejeune) & we absolutely LOVED it there! Beautiful island with great beaches & gorgeous emerald green water....more quiet, laid back & secluded than a lot of the other more touristy areas. Fort Macon State Park (at the far east end of Emerald Isle) is a pretty cool place to check out. We also really enjoyed visiting the small fishing towns of Swansboro & Beaufort (lots of cool pirate stuff there with their proud history of Blackbeard) in the area. And the ferry trip to Shackleford Banks to see the wild ponies is a lot of fun! We really loved this area and it is one of the few things we are sad about our son getting out of the Corps....we don't have a reason to visit often now like we used to....but I do want to go back with our 560 some day and venture further north to see the Outer Banks!

Sorry, I can't be much help with suggestions for anything south of Jacksonville/Lejeune because we only went that direction one afternoon to tour the USS North Carolina in Wilmington. We did enjoy that.

I hope you have a wonderful trip and share your adventure & photos with us on here!
