Nights 54-102

September 14 heading out on a trip to Austin for Pegs daughters birthday. The idea is to go from a mere 53 nights since buying our tear to 100 plus. This would give us more than one of every two nights since buying "The Silver Pullit" on the road with it.

Here is a link to the pictures.
https://photos.google.com/album/AF.../AF1QipM7vMLXqCqom_R-svMLJgSzPpWoCHxkmRdkzLs9

We stayed home most of July and August other than a two week trip to Canada and we anxious to "get back out there" wherever "there" might be.

9/14 day 1 257 miles
Headed east to Montana from our home in Coeur d'Alene ID. No particular plans, just to take a month to get to Austin. In Montana we got a phone call from a friend from Cd'A who said we just passed him. We agreed we would meet up in Phillipsburg. Cute town and wonderful candy store. Stocked up on sweets for the trip. Our friend was meeting others at Stewart Bay campground so we followed along and had a great evening among friends, until the rains started.

9/15 day 2 249mi
Peg made bacon, eggs and hashbrowns for everyone in our friends full sized trailer which was great since it was still raining. We headed south. Camped in Madison campground in Yellowstone NP. The rains has stopped though everything dripped and it was only 45 degrees so quite cool.

9/16 day 3 46mi
Hung out at Yellowstone lodge since it was pouring rain. If you are going to get rained on it a very nice place to be. Camped at Grant campground. The only generator running in the campground was right next to us. Ahh the peace and quiet of nature. lol

9/17 day 4 83mi
Woke up to the sounds of the generator. Headed to the shower which was included in our campground fee. Clean and refreshed we headed to the Tetons. Camped at Gros Ventae Campground in Teton NP. Should have had beautiful views of the mountains all day, but Murphy hit us with low clouds and rain. I bought a new coat since my Patagonia gortex shell decided it did not want to repel rain anymore.

9/18 day 5 34mi
Woke up to sunshine! Only drove 34 miles today to Hoback F.S. park right on a river. This was (and still is) then only time we camped at the first site we saw in a campground. We always drive the loop to find the best site, here we knew we were in the right site as soon as we saw it. Peg cooked us a great pot-roast dinner with green beans and honeycrisp apple and blueberries. The stars were fantastic, we could see the Milky Way. Yea, out of the rain.

9/19 day 7 46mi
Drove into Jackson Hole, visited the National Elk refuge and toured the town. Very cute but very crowed with tourists. Hit the laundry mat, stocked up on groceries.

9/20 day 8 0mi
Enjoyed staying in a beautiful site, enjoying the sunshine and quiet. Peg cooked us a brunch of pork tenderloin medallions, eggs, hashbrowns, blueberries and honeycrisp apple juice. She loves the galley in the tear and I love her cooking.

9/21 day 9 246mi
After 3 nights in a great spot we needed to go somewhere so we could charge our battery. Headed to Pinedale and the Mountain man museum. After a wonderful visit there we headed down the Flaming Gorge in New Mexico which did not impress us. When we got into the Utah part of the gorge we were impressed. Stayed at Willows campground. Saw a big horn sheep at the edge of the campground, a prong horn? sheep in our campsite and spawning salmon next to our site all with a beautiful colored shear hillside as a backdrop. We like these small campsites soooo much better than the crowded National Parks.

9/22 day 9 0mi
We are having so much fun watching the salmon we are staying another day. We even have a flower garden and tomatoes growing in our site thanks to the host that has left for the season.

9/23 day 10 226mi
On to Dinosaur National Monument. Very interesting and well worth the stop if you are in the area. Camped at Yampa River SP in Colorado. We were able to do laundry and shower though the campground was too commercial for our taste. Peg did manage to put together a wonderful steak dinner.

9/24 day 11 138mi
Headed to Steamboat Springs. Very nice cute town. We gassed up and headed to Rocky Mountain NP. We stayed Timber Creek campground where we had stayed two years previously. That trip we were still tent camping and woke to the sound of moose munching grass right next to the tent. This time we saw moose and elk very close, different experience, very cool both times.
Spaghetti tonight.

9/25-29 day 12-16 88mi
Spectacular scenery, the aspens were a brilliant yellow. Stopped in Estes Park for lunch and to visit the Stanley Hotel where the movie The Shining was filmed. Down the road we went and stopped in Neederland for ice. We came out for the grocery store and started the Audi. Something was not right! started toward the highway which was only a block away, well we made it a block and a half. Now parked on the edge of town on the side of the highway the car is not running well enough to continue. Its a nice little "hippie" town and it is Friday afternoon. Not a place to find a mechanic for any car let alone an Audi. We sat on the curb pouring over the manual, googling mechanics, and keeping our fingers crossed. Finally we called a tow truck.
When they came they put the car on a flat bed and hooked "The Silver Pullit" to the back. We were lucky that it died when it did, the road from there to Boulder is very twisty with no cell signal. Glad we did not try to drive further. The tow truck backed our little trailer into a spot in the Audi parking lot and put our can next to it. It is now late Friday and the dealership is closed. First thing in the morning when they opened I explained our dilemma. They found that one of my fuel injectors stuck open flooding that cylinder with gas. They said it was a VERY unusual issue with my model car and they had to get the part from Texas which they could not order until Monday.

We ended up camped in the Audi parking lot for 5 nights! They treated us VERY well, ran an extension cord to the tear and gave us a new A6 loaner car so we could explore the area and we had wifi. Silver lining, I mentioned earlier in this post that my coat no longer was water proof. We found a Patagonia dealer while in downtown Boulder and when I explained what happened they said to bring it in as they warranty forever. They looked up the coat in an old catalog (1998 i think) and gave me a gift card for the full value.

9/30 day 17 106mi
Stayed in Prospector campground above Frisco lake. When we were here in the spring we were right on the lake and loved the spot. In this campground we were way above the lake. Great having different views.

10/1 day 18 129mi
The camp host came around to collect our fee and told us that there was a rec center in a nearby town where we could shower. Hmmm, no showers at the Audi dealer, did he think we needed one? Anyway we were very pleased at the prospect. Headed to town and showered. When you live in a tear showers are such a wonderful luxury.

Before I hit a key I shouldn't and loose this I will post and continue in a new post. See part 2

Nice trip..... Can I go camping with Peg? all those meals sound wonderful... nice job...

Doing what should be done with a Camp Inn...
Luv it...

I am following Frank's lead - Larry's daily coverage of the meals are more descriptive then about the campgrounds and surrounding scenery. Doesn't sound like you guys had any missed suppers. Definitely enjoying you TD.

Nights 54-102 part 2

10/1 day 18 129 mi continued
After our shower we headed to Vail. Very cute and expensive, not our cup of tea but glad we stopped. Drove up Glenwood canyon which was very picturesque. Made it to Rifle Colorado where we had relatives.

10/2 day 19 0m
Explored Rifle, played Frisbee with their dog and ordered a solar panel for the tear. Love Amazon prime.

10/3 day 20 0mi
Had our cousin as a guide on a side trip to Aspen. Really nice little town, again expensive but still had a down home kind of feel. If I had unlimited funds (high housing costs), this would be a nice place to live. Kind of like Coeur d'Alene where we live but without the tall buildings we now have.

10/4 day 21 0mi
Made a day trip to Rifle Falls SP. We were not expecting much but were quite impressed. You can get up and personal with a few waterfalls, which was quite cooling on a hot day.

10/22 day 22 158mi
Showered before we bade goodbye to the cousins. So nice to spend some time with them. Tucked the new solar panel into the car and off we went. We headed over Grand Mesa as our cousins raved about the drive and view. The fog was so thick at times I would barely see the road. Slow going. Camped at Ridgeway SP, Elk Ridge campground. Nice campground with very gnarly trees.

10/23 day 23 71mi
Though it rained much of the night (being from Seattle I love the sound of rain on the tear) we woke to blue skies. Went through Ouray to go over the "million dollar highway". We did not stop in Ouray as we heard there were delays up ahead. We should have stopped in town, it is so quaint. (We will go back) We ended up waiting 1 1/2 hours for the construction delay when we could have explored the town. SPECTACULAR drive once we got past the construction. Peg and I voted it one of our top 3 drives anywhere. If you have not been down this highway and have a chance, do it! Camped at Haviland Lake forest service campground just north of Durango. In this area there is a small campground called Molas Lake. Reservations are required and if you can get them you will not be sorry. The scenery is again, spectacular.

10/7 day 24 0mi
It is so dark here that at night we could literally not see our hand in front of our face. There was no moon, no lights, just stars, wow. We headed into Durango and exchanged our propane (Blue Rhino) at the same place we had bought it in May when we were having propane problems. (Put in a new regulator per Cary, works great now.) Love Durango, had lunch at the Strater Hotel as we had in May. Some day we will take the narrow gauge rail to Silverton. $95 each is just a bit steep though.

10/8 day 25 0mi
Staying for a third night here as we like the spot. Pretty deserted which we like, as well as pretty. Put out our new solar panel, moved the panel, moved the panel, aired out bedding
(After we got home I order an extension cord for the panel and a second panel.) Leaving the site and just as we were about to pull onto the highway I found (railroad tracks thankfully) that the hitch was not on the ball. Thought I had locked it down, well check and double check.

10/9 day 26 69mi
Drove to Mesa Verde NP as we knew we could shower and do laundry there. We always find Mesa Verde fascinating. Stars were unbelievable again.

10/10 day 27 290mi
We went to 4 corners because it had been years since we had done the body part in 4 states at once thing. Once we left there we found that campgrounds were few and far between. We finally found a spot (one of the last) at Redondo campground. The drive there was very pretty, lots of red rocks and red dirt. The prettiest area of New Mexico we have found.

10/11 day 28 401mi
It was a long straight drive to Texas. We stayed at Guadalupe NP as I had found it kind of neat two years before (except for the HOT night and the flies that drove us out in the morning). I had liked the stargazing. I was not disappointed this time. Not hot, no flies but since we did not have a tent this time we had to park with the RVs. Their RV area is literally the parking lot. Still liked it, good view, lots of stars and nice people.

10/12 day 29 0mi
R & R'ed, charged using the new solar panel, chatted with neighbors, visited the visitors center.

10/13 day 30 377mi
Long drive to Junction, stopped at Fort Lancaster. Camped at South Leano SP. They have a turkey preserve and lots of deer.

10/14 day 31 0mi
Walked through the turkey preserve (did not see any), watched the deer, showered. Chatted with a guy who had a 550 ultra (older than ours). This is the first one we had seen other than ours. Interesting comparing. The differences are subtle but how people do there own little tweaks is interesting. Got a tour of an Airstream Bambi, they look so cute but once inside the quality does not match the 550 Ultra, not even close in my mind.

10/15 day 32 178mi
Another shower before we hit the road. What luxury, two days in a row! Made it to Pflugerville where Pegs daughter and grand kids live. We made it. This was our destination.

10/16 day 33 0mi
We all went to Lockhart for BarBQ. Went to Smitty's for brisket, ribs and sausage, a real pork out. Very old interesting town.

10/17 day 34 0mi
Hung with family.

10/18 day 35 191mi
Said goodbye to family and headed to Fredricksburg. Another cute crowed tourist town worth our stop. Back to South LLano River SP. We had really liked the showers a few days before but this time ALL water in the park was shut off due to repairs!

10/19 day 36 266mi
Went to Marathon, the gateway to Big Bend NP. We had dinner at the Gage Hotel. Very worth seeing. Peg had a great prickly pear margarita which she loved. Ok, maybe two. We were staying in the Marathon hotel and RV park. The good:WONDERFUL shower, best of any trip. Nice outdoor fire area where we met some very nice people. The bad:right on a highway with train tracks next to it. Bring earplugs. lol

10/20 day 37 79mi
Big Bend NP. We are impressed. Camped in Chisos basin campground. Jagged peaks 360 degrees around us, lots of stars and roadrunners.

10/21 day 38 166mi
We went to Terlingua which has many stone ruins to walk through. Interesting as it is not a park, just part of the town. Then on to Fort Davis which is very interesting. Established 1854 to protect wagon trains from indian attacks on the 600 mile route from San Antonio to El Paso. 700 soldiers barracked there in its prime. Camped at Davis Mountains SP. where we saw our first javelinas. Had 3 right in our campsite.

10/22 day38 332mi
Headed to I-10. I avoid freeways whenever possible but it is difficult down here. Going through El Paso it was interesting to see Cuidad Juarez right across the border. (Across the street is how it felt.) We camped in Rockhound SP New Mexico. It is the only park we have been in where they encourage you to take rocks home with you. Kind of fun Prickly pear cactus everywhere. I found out not once but twice that even a slight brush against them is ill advised! Good thing I had pliers.

10/23 day 40 261mi
Wore flip flops to the restroom this morning and ended up with cactus spines in the bottom of my foot. This definitely different than the NW where I grew up. Headed to Saguaro NP. Small park but worth seeing for the long armed very old cactus. Drove up Catalina drive out of the park and into the mountains. Stunning drive. Camped at Rose Lake campground. Upper 80's in Saguaro, upper 50's here.

10/24 day 41 267mi
Headed out quickly in the morning as it was COLD. Warmer than the beginning of the trip but the days before it was HOT, we were not ready for the rapid change. Up toward Sonora, stopped at Tonto National Monument. We had never heard of it. It is cliff dwellings like Mesa Verde but MUCH smaller. Too hot to do the very steep hike to the dwellings. Stayed at Clearcreek Campground (forest service primitive) very nice.In the night we smelled propane! Where could that be originating? I got up and opened the galley carefully (afraid of sparks?). It appears when Peg was cleaning the stove her rag caught on one of the burners and turned the gas on!

10/25 day 42 55mi
Went into Sedona. It sure is no longer as I remember it. Bustling tourist town. Its a nightmare trying to find a place to park a tear. Glad we stopped but just barely. Beautiful area though. Camped at Cave Springs forest service campground.

10/26 day 43 244mi
Beautiful drive up highway 89(A). It felt like we were driving along the bottom of the Grand Canyon which we were very close to. We even crossed the Colorado river. The difference was no traffic, our kind of drive. We stopped at a place called "cliff dwellings". There were no cliff houses but people had build stone houses under HUGE boulders. Worth a stop, not a park, just a pull off from the highway. Camped a Coral Springs SP. Lots of (orange) sand dunes. (and a shower, yea!)

10/27 day 44 51mi
Managed to be sitting on top of the highest dune with coffee and a cigar as the sun came up. Unique experience. Drove to Zion which is one of my favorite parks. It is so unique. We entered from the east and stayed at South Zion campground. Went into Springdale for supplies and laundry. Peg managed to break her only pair of eyeglasses. (She now has backups for her backups.)

10/28 day 45 51mi My birthday!
We took the shuttle to Zion Lodge for lunch and ate on the deck with a beautiful view. Had dinner in Springdale at the Bit and Spur. Great meals, views, Peg. Good birthday. What better place to celebrate.

10/29 day 46 355mi
Found I had left the red light burning in the galley all night. oops! Drove to north of Salt Lake City, cold and raining the whole drive. Camped at Willard SP, we were the only ones in the campground in the rain. Glad we have the TV/DVD option.

10/30 day 47 345mi
Stopped in Dillon Montana for lunch. Peg noticed that there was a Patagonia outlet store in town. (Remember my gift card from Boulder?) I got a new coat and Peg got a vest, perfect. We found a BLM campground in Divide which was recommended by our salesperson at Patagonia. Cold and windy.

10/31 day 47 297mi
Back to Coeur d'Alene Idaho on Halloween.

The trip in a nutshell:
6233 miles total
5850 miles with tear
$4800 including car repair
47 nights
18.6 mpg
130 miles per day average

We managed to total 102 nights in the tear since buying it in April which is more than 1 in every 2 nights since then.

Lets see, we have ripped off both of our leveling jacks, did not lock down the hitch ball, left galley light on, left the gas on... so far so good. We are still alive and happy.

Just some observations now that we have "some time under our belts".
1) Check and double check, then triple check everything!
2) Fewer driving days. Stop and smell the roses. Its ok for us to drive distance if we need to but stay longer where we do stay. We actually enjoyed our longest stay and it was in an Audi parking lot!
3) Glad we got the solar panels. We like camping where there are not hookups. We felt we needed to drive to charge. Now we can stay until we want to leave. Unhook and explore the area.
4) We can get by with far fewer cloths than we thought. Laundry mats are everywhere.
5) Almost all State Parks (our experience) have showers.
6) Give a little thanks to Cary and Craig for building such a wonderful little home away from home.

Travel safe,
Larry and Peg

Peg is a great cook and she likes doing it (as well as the clean up). My meal posts weakened as the days went on but the meals never did as my waistline can attest.

Frank,
We can't thank you enough for selling le droppe to us. We can't wait to get back on the road this spring, before the BTKs.

Heheh, cooking, yah, I'll just follow the "Bread Crumbs"....

Nice, so many places, so little time...

Happy Trails...

Enjoyed reading of your adventurers! These are great for future trips. When we travel we keep a journal and at each campsite/ground we explore for the prime site then make note of it for future trips. The experiance with the gas stove is also a great learning lesson for all .....thanks for sharing! R

We picked our 560 up last April and have 27 nights so far. Enjoyed your write up. Mesa Verde is on our list of possibilities this summer as we may make aSouthwest run this summer. Solar panel is nice, we got one too. And we learned the hard way about hitching the trailer correctly. We got new brakes and tires after our first 2 night outing last April. Last summer, we passed through Couer d'Alaine last June. It was the weekend of the Ironman there. We went to Spokane to see family after three weeks in The Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and Glacier.

We also do a journal where we record what happened during the day, miles traveled, campsite including site number, park passport stamps and each day I draw a picture of something meaningful from the day. We use Rustico leather bound journals that fit in my denim shirt pocket or my back pocket so it is always handy.
Happy travels,
Larry and Peg
