If you lived in Central Texas where's it's HOT and you wanted to go west after going north to Palo Dura Canyon to see the play "Texas", where would you go? Keeping in mind that Colorado is where we're thinking - but we've been to a lot of places there - I'm wanting big mountains and cool, shady streams. I saw the NC post and it looked great but not the direction we want to go. Love historical places and need electricity and water - we don't like to boondock. Thanks in advance for your input!

Oh - we've been too: Tombstone, Sedona, AZ, Colorado Springs, Estes Park, Durango, Salt Lake City, some 40 yrs. ago, but I'm looking for new adventures as well as re-visiting some places. Cool, shady, electric & water if you know of any places to stay.

Linda, depending on when you want to go, why don't you try to join the First Pacific Northwest Campout that Evan has pulled together. On your way north, you could travel through the California Redwoods, then up the Oregon coast, then hang a right along the Columbia River and meet up with us the first weekend in August. You'll have a beautiful trip AND get to meet a bunch of wonderful PNWers.

Kathy

Oh Kathy that would be great but we have obligations here till the 7th of August! Not to mention that that is WAY further west that we want to go at this time...I'd love to meet all y'all. When are you due to get your 550?

We've only used our twice - this spring and summer has been crazy to say the least with our kids and grandkids - we need to 'get outta Dodge' BIGTIME and go away. I'd like to go sit somewhere and vedge out by a stream and enjoy nature and the cool mountains - maybe see a Squatch or two...:)

Hopefully, it will be ready sometime mid to late August. We hope to eventually make it around to Texas after we go east, then south. We'll let you know.

Kathy

Kathy,
I've had an epiphany (sp)...I decided to change the date of a test one doc scheduled (as a precaution)and take the month of August to go somewhere! I made that decision this evening! So it's too late to make it all the way to Oregon from Texas but we're heading west in a few days hopefully. I'm headed north to Palo Dura Canyon and the play Texas and see the canyon, then maybe over to Albuquerque, NM then somewhere else west - what are your plans? Wanna meet up somewhere?

would love it but it won't work in August. hopefully, we can see you during "the big trip 2011" this fall. have a good time; hope you hit some cooler temps. Kathy

Just and FYI in case you all can make it to the PNW, I have various sites list and camping site locators if that might help in the future.

Of course, we're going through a heat wave too...
It's been running low to mid 70's...
We try to call it "Summer"

Here's the link if that helps...

Linda,
We have always enjoyed Northern New Mexico and Colorado. We love going to the various Pueblos and seeing what the local artists have done, especially their pottery, baskets and weaving. We always stop at each Pueblo's main headquarters, often a small house converted to an office, and introduce ourselves to the people that are there and ask if we can look around. They have always seemed appreciative of the fact that we stopped and asked and generally give us free rein to look around and visit their Pueblo. We have come to really appreciate native American art and have been fortunate enough to have collected (bought) a number of pots, rugs and inexpensive jewelry. Also, have you been to the Mesa Verde National Park just north of the New Mexico border with Colorado to explore the cliff dwellings? A "Must See" adventure. We have not stayed here but there is a RV park there called Morehead that has a few full hookup sites (about 15 I think). Here is the linkhttp://www.visitmesaverde.com/stay/lodging/morefield-campground/single--group-camping.aspx.
You could also stay in Durango which is a fair sized town and quite nice and has a number of RV parks. If you went to Mesa Verde you could then proceed a little further west and take in the Monument Valley which to me will always be a homage to the "Johns" (Ford and Wayne) for all the great films made in this area.

To fpoole (is it Fred?),
Thanks for the "Trip Planning" link. A lot of things we would like to do are in here including the old train near Mt. Rainier and the Blues festival in Coulee. A great compilation, thanks,
Jim

Jim, that sounds like a plan! We really want to go to Monument Valley and I didn't realize it was that close. We love Mesa Verde but it's been YEARS since we've been there, so it'll be nice to revisit it.

HOW SOME EVER...our plans just got changed AGAIN today! We received information that the people leasing our home in Arkansas are moving on Sept. 1 and we must plan a trip back to release and get the place cleaned up and move some furniture out that we'd left there. I'd take the Raindrop but I need to bring a Uhaul with some furniture back to Texas storage to move into our new home when we move. SIGH...life is getting in way of us having fun! But I think we'll take her out for a week before we have to go to Arkansas at the end of the month.

If you are coming our way into New Mexico be aware that all of the fires are out, finally. One cool place to stay would be Black Canyon just above Santa Fe. The only thing I am not sure about is whether they have hookups. Being only about 10 miles from the Plaza gives you Santa Fe to play in during the day, not to mention all of the Pueblos around the area. Send a PM and we will meet you at one of the local dining spots around the area, since we are half way between Albuquerque and Santa Fe we know the area well.
We plan on being at Black Cayon the weekend of the 12th so will have more info by then.

There are no hookups in the Black Canyon campground - but it is a beautiful campground with great individual campsites. There are also no hookups in Hyde Memorial State Park next door. Both have only pit toilets (nice pit toilets). However, there is a Santa Fe park district health club facility 8 miles away in Santa Fe for showers. $3 a pop, but you'll have the use of their pool as well. We spent a week in Black Canyon this June and really loved the entire area. Have a great time!

Linda you might have already left and returned by now, but in case you haven't, I wanted to tell you that we stayed at Matterhorn Campground in the National Forest about 11 miles from Telluride, Co this summer for a few days.It is at 9500 feet, cool, and very beautiful. I'm betting anyone would like. Good luck

Sounds gorgeous! We're in Hot Springs, AR at the moment...life is getting in the way of our vacation - I'll update when I get some confirmation on where we're headed.
