Mid Atlantic Adventure

Finally heading out in the morning for a week of camping in Virginia and Delaware. A summer of cataract surgery for me and visiting a sick relative plus getting our daughter ready to transfer to Clemson has kept us out of Jeremiah.

3 nights at Pocahantas State Park near Richmond, VA. A friend of mine has an art exhibit at VCU that we will see while there. Other possiblities will be Yorktown, Jamestown, Mount Vernon and even some Civil War battlefields. I am a history teacher.

The next 3 nights we will be at Trap Pond State in Delaware. Probably head over to the beach one day on the Delaware coast and in Trap Pond we plan on doing some hiking and kayaking through the bald cypress trees.

Luckily, I noticed the ants in the Camp Inn today as we were packing. They were in our storage building underneath some of the stuff we take with us. I saw them so we unpacked, checked everything out and got rid of the ants in Jeremiah. Glad we didn't find them at midnight one night, don't think they were fire ants but I would prefer they not share the bed with me while I'm camping.

Warren and Mary Ellen,

If you visit Yorktown and Jamestown and time permits, check out Endview Plantation. It has an interesting Civil War museum and battlefield site.

Safe travels!
Deb

Please report how things go at Trap pond. Most folks just head to the beaches of Delaware and ignore anything inland. I'd love to hear how it goes there as this is within easy striking distance for me. Thanks.

Will do. We pick this over Cape Benlopen after I read reviews of it. Sounds like they crammed as many as possible when they renovated the park. Trap Pond sounded interesting so we thought we’d try. We also considered Smallwood State Park in Maryland.

Pictures are from the Civil War Sites around Richmond. Two are at the Tredegar Iron Works Along the river. The other is of the earthworks or trenches at Cold Harbor. We also visited Chickahominy Bluff which was an area my 3rd Great Grandfather became sick and died from the illness just before the Battle of the Seven Days began. The other place we saw was the Chimborazo Medical Museum. Richmond has been nice and so has Pocahontas State Park.

The other thing we saw was my friends art exhibit at the Contemporary Arts Institute at VCU. It was done to attention to racism both past/present. I would post pics of it but is hard to explain the imagery he used to make his point without people thinking Ill of you. It was well done though and glad we went. This is an African-American man who made Klan robes, not to support them but to use them as a way of combating racism. They are all different types of materials, colors, patterns, not what you expect of Klan robes for sure.

Tomorrow we drive up to Delaware to Trap Pond State Park. Jeremiah gets go on/thru the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel.

Made it to Delaware and after crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel we found one of the last remaining Stuckey’s operating. So far we like Trap Pond State Park and this area. Just finished a crab cake at a local eatery. Delicious!

Last day at Trap Pond State Park. Kayak trip here at the park into the Bald Cyypress Swamp. Beautiful to see and very peaceful. After lunch we drove to the coast to Bethany Beach, Delaware which is a nice beach. The surf was pretty tough and knocked us both for a loop at different times. I lost my prescription sunglasses when it happened to me. Luckily they were an old pair, but since my cataract surgery they were the ones I could wear with my new lens. Fortunately CVS had a clip on set that worked with my regular glasses. We have enjoyed it here, the people in Delaware have been very friendly to us. Heading out for home in the morning. 10 hours to do it one day and I have to be home by late Tuesday for an eye appointment so we will play by ear to see if we can do it all tomorrow or not.
