Only 3 days left - here's a couple pics from the last few days. I wonder how much it would cost to ship the teardrop down here...

A mother whale, a baby breaching, and a tail on the horizon:

Gorgeous! We loved seeing the whales in Alaska - just tailes and some blowing, but no breaching - we didn't get that lucky! Great photo's!

Ken,

Those are some great photos. The whales shot was great timing to get that much action in one shot. What lens were you using on that one?

Thanks guys! This is usually a good time to see whales here. We've done a whale boat tour before, but have never seen them any closer than when we are sitting at the condo pool. Hutch, these whales were with a 300mm on a Nikon D300, so about a 450mm in 35mm terms. And, they were heavily cropped. I'd like to get close enough for a really good shot.

Ken,

Thanks for the lens info. Really a great shot with such a long lens and most likely hand held since the action is totally impromptu.

Enjoy your remaining time in Maui.

Hutch

George, the whales are really something to see. Today, we were sitting at a beach and about 6 or 7 whales came along and started to breach, one after the other. They were so close you could hear them slamming into the water! Very cool. Of course, no camera.

Hutch, they were handheld. I thought about bringing the tripod, but figured it would not really help much because of the impromptu nature of these shots. I had the shutter speed cranked up pretty high, though. I've got a lot of work to do on my technique, but that's all part of the fun of it.
