Lowcountry Part 2

Heading back to the Lowcountry of South Carolina tomorrow. We will be camping at Givhans Ferry State Park, which is on the Edisto River. In addition to that park, we will get 3 more off of our list of South Carolina State Parks for our quest to visit all of them. Two will be historical sites, Colonial Dorchester and Charlestown Landing. The first is a town that was abandoned after the American Revolution while the second is a recreation of the first English colony in the Carolinas. The final park on this trip will be Edisto Beach State Park which is on Edisto Island south of Charleston. We will have our daughter on this trip with us.

Looking forward to a day on the beach, fresh Lowcountry seafood and BBQ. Not looking forward to the 95 degree temps though.

We've been to both of those before, although Huntington Beach was about 15 years ago. Yes, Beaufort is a neat place and the food is really good there. We didn't camp at Hunting Island but spent a lot of time there in December as we were in house on Harbor Island near it. In the future, we will make it there to camp in the park and I expect that probably needs to be soon before the rest of that campground is washed out to sea. Once we complete this Ultimate Outsider quest with the SC state parks one of things it opens up is a visit to the island sold by Ted Turner to park system. It is near Hunting Island and they are trying to figure out how to open access to it without changing the island in any way.

Got in everything but the BBQ, the place I wanted to try was closed on Wed, the day we traveled home. Another time it will happen. We did have a good time and survived the heat and humidity of Lowcountry. Also, we managed to meet every mosquito and deer fly in Dorchester County. Nothing like what encountered in the UP Michigan one June but it was a constant battle for sure. We are now 8 away from completing this crazy quest of visiting all the state parks in South Carolina. Four on this trip including a couple of historic sites and even got to talk to the man who was doing some restoration work on the tabby (oyster shells, lime, sand & water) walls of the fort at Colonial Dorchester. He was actually repairing damage from the 1886 earthquake. Charlestown Landing is at the original site of the English settlement. They later moved to the current place after about 20 years since this place at low tide was inaccessible for the boats. Found two campgrounds we liked, Givhans Ferrry where we camped this time and Edisto Beach will be in our future camping plans.
