Leaving on a long haul tomorrow!

Well, we've got our "long haul trip" decided - we're not long range planners - more spur of the moment - decide along the way types. But so far, here's the plan:

From San Antonio, Tx. to Camp Inn/Camp Outt via Niagra Falls!

Wed.
Leave tomorrow around 3 and head to towards Palo Duro Canyon. Spend the night 1/2 way there in a motel (dog & cat traveling with us to Hot Springs, so we need motels till we can get them there.)

Thurs. Ck. into motel, leave dog and cat, see the show, eat a steak dinner outdoors under the stars before play starts.

Fri. Ck. into a motel in Tulsa, Ok and visit with youngest son and new bride for 1st time since their marriage in May - they have a 1 bedroom apt. and no room for us except in the Camp Inn, but too hot for animals - cat mostly.

Sat. Arrive Hot Springs area to stay for 10 days with best friends in the B & B. Leave dog and cat there with friends and/or board them.

Sept. 1, leave Hot Springs, arrive Paducah, Ky and set up camp in KOA most probably

Sept. 2, See National Quilt Museum (I'm a quilter)

Sept. 3 If we want to see other things, we'll stay another day

Sept. 4 - Head to Lexington, Ky and see Bluegass farms - they're so gorgeous I want to see them again! Probably camp in the area there.

Sept. 5 - Heading North through Cincinnati and go through the Amish country around Charm, etc. - been there, done that in 1999 but want to go back.

From this point we're headed to Niagara Falls in Buffalo, NY but we want go to Toronto to see it from that side. May spend the night there and leave MiniMc in a campground on US side if we can. We could take it but not sure how we want to do all this - any suggestions or campground info. we could use would be appreciated. Bear's probably been everywhere, so any campground info. would be nice - need electric & water.

Then we'll mosey around the Great Lakes, heading towards Necedah and the Camp Outt. Afterwards we're headed back to Texas via Hot Springs to pick up the animals.

So if anyone has any suggestions of things we must see and campgrounds to stay at we'd appreciate it! We're not hikers by the way (too much surgery on the feet and back.) Now to get off this computer and get packed! I'm leaving in less than 24 hrs.!

In our experience, spur of the moment usually turns out to be the best!
Have safe travels, and a memorable adventure!

Thanks! By my rough calculations our trip will be approximately 3,794 miles, not making the 5,000 - so Bill's looking at the map to see where we can make up that 1,300 miles! :) Gee life's tough....

I think you mean you want to cross over into Niagara Falls, Onatrio to see the Falls. You would have to have really good eyesight as Toronto is a good 1 1/2 hours from Niagara Falls, NY. :)

We have been there several times. The Falls are pretty cool. The best view of all the Falls is on the Canadian side. The light show at night is neat. On the American side, you can look down over them. We've also done the Maid of the Mist & Cave of the Winds. On part of the Cave of the Winds tour, you come out right next to Bridal Veil Falls. Pretty cool & VERY wet!

When your are heading east towards New York, swing through Tennessee and visit the Smokies! With the kids in school here, camping shouldn't be a problem during the week. If you do, Clingmans Dome, and Cades Cove are a must visit. Especially Cades Cove. Maybe pick up Gettysburgh on the way North from Tennessee. That should all get ya some added miles.
I wouldn't miss Gettysburgh for the world. If you get into it like I do, you picture and smell the battles, as well as hear the spirits that linger. Breath taking.

George - thanks - we've been there, done that on all points! Cade Cove is Cool!, Gettysburgh is awesome and inspiring - missed Clingmans Dome, but we will swing back through Tennessee on our way back to Hot Springs and stop at the Hermitage again in Nashville.

Sounds like a great trip! Spur of the moment, 'by-the-seat-of-your-pants' can be the best kind of trip to do.
If you have time while in Paducah, drive down a bit to Land Between the Lakes. A beautiful area with good camping.
Assuming you'll be staying on the US side from the Falls to the CampOutt, I'd suggest a stay at Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton, IN. Right on Lake Michigan's shoreline, the campground was recently redone; most sites have electric and a nice level concrete pad. Great bathroom facilities, and easy access to many of the parks features.
Have a safe trip!

EDIT: Here's a nice state park in Ohio near Port Clinton - East Harbor S.P. - with a few lighthouse's in the area. We stayed there on the way back to Chicago when we first picked up our teardrop in Erie, PA a couple years ago.

Linda you & Bill have a safe and wonderful trip I am sure we will be getting updates from the road, again be safe and have fun. Steve :)

Consider stopping in Elkhart, Indiana to visit the vintage RV museum. Drive thru Michigan. Either to see Mackinaw Island and the Upper Peninsula, has many beautiful state parks on either border. Heck, even visit Door County in NE Wisconsin. Fish Boils are fun.

Finding the extra 1300 miles will be easy.

Bill and Linda, have a great time If you need some extra miles going south - hit the river road on the WI side and then cross over below winona and drop down the MN side - beautiful peaceful drive lots of small roads to take short excursions on.

Betsey - Got'em! Had Bill's renewed a couple of months ago and mine's still good

Thanks ya'll for the input on things to see - I'm not familiar with WI and IN at all!

Oh, the drive up along the mississippi river to Winona, MN is beautiful. Bob and I both went to college there in the late 60's but never appreciated how gorgeous it is.
