SC State Park Lake Wateree State Park

Discussion in 'Southeast' started by Warren Mary Ellen, Jun 16, 2019.

  1. Lake Wateree State Park is located in the Old English District of South Carolina. It is about halfway between Charlotte, NC and Columbia, SC and is about 5 miles east of I-77. The main focus of the park is the lake which is rather large. The campground has 72 sites and 15 of them are on the lake that are very shady. Paved sites with a gravel area with a picnic table, fire ring and lantern posts. We thought this was one of the nicer and well maintained campgrounds in the South Carolina. It is pretty remote and there is no cell service. The closest towns are Camden and Winnsboro.

Camden has a couple of steeplechase races, one in the spring and one in the fall if you are into horse. The spring event is a helluva party, not sure anyone really goes for the race. If you are into military history, Camden was the sight of a major British victory in the American Revolution. And if you live near any place name Dekalb, the namesake of you city or county was killed in the battle is buried there. Depending on what direction you drove to Necedah, you may have gone through Dekalb, IL and there are 6 or 7 other Dekalbs out there.

Should be a good place to camp if you are traveling I-77 or if you are into lake life. I would want reservations especially on the weekends as they were pretty full on a weekday when we there. Nice place just to hang out if nothing else, rent a kayak or a boat.

Nearby is the state park of Lansford Canal. Beautiful spider lilies bloom in May and June in the river.
