Visited Lake Greenwood State Park today and checked out the campground to see if we would like to camp there in the future. It is a nice park with great facilities. The Drummond Center is named for a former State Senator who was a decorated WWII pilot who had worked in the CCC when the park was built in the 1930s. The Center has a CCC Museum within it and a large room that can be rented for events and it overlooks the lake. I used to work in Greenwood and met him several times while he was still serving in the state senate. He was quite a character. The larger nearby town is Greenwood about 15 miles and it is a small city. Closer to the park is the small town of Ninety Six which has Revolutionary War site called the Ninety Six Historic Site maintained by the National Park Service. The fort that was there in the 1700s was 96 miles away from the Cherokee town of Keowee. They were part of a trade path that connected the coast to the mountains without having to cross any of the larger rivers in South Carolina. Find US 178 on a map and it closely follows the same route today and if you follow it through Anderson where I live, you will pass my house.
The campground has 125 sites and many of them back up to the 11,000 acre lake. This is one of the better maintained campgrounds I have seen in the SC State Parks. There are 2 loops in the campground. Sites are paved with fire ring, picnic table, fire ring, electricity and water. Bath houses are spaced evenly. Short nature trail, fishing pier, boat ramp and picnic shelters in the park. The Tearjerkers of the Southern Appalachian Chapter has used the park for a gathering in the last couple of years.
Grocery about 7-8 miles away. The city hosts the South Carolina Festival of Flowers in June so that is a busy week or two and is close enough to Augusta, GA so that the week (April)The Masters golf tournament is played everything in Greenwood fills up. There are several nice golf courses in the area if you play. Not far from the Newberry Opera House which has some nice musical acts there.
